690 is the same as 680 only with 32 MB ram

Actually, Now doing more research, I've decided that the NEC MP790 is the way to go.
around the same price as the J690 but it has HPC2000 and is lighter and has a faster processor and has a bigger keyboard than the 690.

lighter? nope, the 690 is the lighter
but it really is better with the MIPS instead of SH3..

Oooh, the J690 is SH3?

I was hping to get an ARM unit because there are so many more apps for them. I used to have a Cassiopeia E-125 and had not problems finding mips programs.

how heavy is the 790 compared to the 690?

The 790 is a MIPS device not an (Strong)ARM one, and yes the above is correct the 690 is a SH3 device.
The only hp devices with StrongARM are the 710, 720, 728 and 820, with NEC it's limited to the 900/900C (To be PC it's XScale, but will natively run StrongARM)

According to NECSAM, the MP790 weights 1.8 lb, whereas the J680/690/710/720/728 weight 1.1 lb

Over here you'll find a comparison between the MP770 (quite similar to the 790) and a J680 (same size that 690/710/720/728): http://smartmobileassets.com/cgi-bin/Blah/Blah.pl?,b=news,v=display,m=1110174688

Hope this helps

BTW - Yes, you should get an ARM unit. like i said in the beginning of the thread, you should get a j710/720
yep 99% of them will work. my experience. if some of them won't, download mfcce211.dll and olece211.dll, they're required for some hpc pro (ce 2.11) apps. the j720 includes these dll's by default, the 900 doesn't.
hm, advantages.. the 900 is newer (should last for a longer time if you buy a perfect unit..), has a faster cpu and usb host but you can utilize the usb fully only if you upgrade the OS to ce.net 4.2. this will still be compatible with 90% of the hpc2000 software. (again, you need to install the above dlls and additionally the hpc versions of mfcce300.dll and olece300.dll (NOT the ppc versions), sometimes toolhelp.dll, and some other dlls also.)
disadvantage: none that i can think of now. maybe size (and weight) could pose a problem for you if you want something more pocketable, it's two times bigger than the j720. my comparison pics can be found here: http://izemize.fw.hu/hpc.php

I recommend a HPC with StrongARM as the HP728/HP728 or the Nec MobilePRO 900(Scale base on StrongARM).
There are a lot of software available for HPC ARM. But there are not the same quantity for MIPS.I think this is fundamental.

Todays with the new windows CE 5.0 nearly I recommend the NEC 900 because has a FlashROM and can be actualized to the new Wince CE 5.0. This unit can use the HPC2000 software and the new CE 4.x software and future.

Buying a MIPS is not a good today. Perhaps two years ago...but now not.
