Are there any PCMCIA based wifi cards that work with the NEC MobilePro 790? (HPC2000 & MIPS processor)

Yeah actually, I already did check there. There were two cards that were compatible with HPC2000, but neither supported a MIPS processor. That is why I came to the forums. (And I only chose this name because it sounds catchy like a super hero or something. Maybe I can become more experienced in the future, but as you can see, it still says HPC Newbie.)

Well, if you checked the HCL, then I applaud your effort...you'd be surprised how many times someone asks the same question and never tries to research it themselves. And, the name is very catchy....I can imagine the superhero costume that goes with it!

Some of the more common wifi cards you see for the MP790 include the Netgear MA401, the Cisco 340 or 350, Orinoco silver and gold cards, Linksys WPC11 v3, Intel Pro 2011, DLink DWL650, Compaq WL110, and the 3COM 3CRWE737A...those are only the pcmcia cards that I have used with the 780/790.

Don't forget that you can probably use most CF wifi cards with an adapter as well.

Off all the cards, I prefer the Cisco 350 card. I like the various security protocols it supports, I like the interface for the HPC screen...I just like it and have never had any problems with it anywhere. And it works in every HPC I've ever attempted to try in in from my Mobilepro 750 up through the 900C, and in my HP Jornadas as well. You can easily find it on eBay for $5-$10 delivered normally.

Someone else jump in here...who has one who can give some feedback on it? I had one, used it, got rid of it because it didn't have all the security protocols that the Aironet 350 did. But for an open wifi spot....that should be fine. Remember, well maybe you can't, but know this: Most all of these 16 bit wifi cards support 64 and 128bit WEP, and most all do not support WPA. So if you are using it with a home network, you may have to modify your home network to accomodate connections. Also do a search for Orinoco Gold...those are also fine cards...and plentiful and cheap.

I'll just tell you what I have in my ebay watch list:

DWL650
Orinoco Silver
Orinoco Gold
Linksys WPC11 x2
Cisco Aironet 350 x2
Netgear MA401

Also, I don't have home Wi-Fi. I just use public hotspots, so I don't need the security protocols.

I'm a fan of the ORiNOCO Gold, as long as it's an older version by Lucent Technologies or Agere Systems. IIRC, one of our old alums here (wallythacker) had good experience with the D-Link DWL650.

Which one do you think will be more compatible with the MobilePro 790? (MIPS & HPC2000) I don't use ActiveSync, so I would need a .cab file to install the drivers. On ebay, the DWL650 is in the original packaging with what ever came with it when it came from the factory, which hopefully includes the CE drivers. The Orinoco Gold card comes alone and used, but in very good condition. I would have to find the drivers to download.

What C:Amie is saying Master, is do more than just look at the HCL, click on the actual card info and you will find all the drivers are here, just waiting for you to download them as needed.

According to the drivers, none of the cards I just listed are compatible with the MP790. I can't really tell for the DWL650, though.

When I clicked on the CE 3 drivers for any given card, it listed compatible devices, and I never saw the MobilePro 790. It should have been listed after the 780, but usually, the 900 was in its place.

Here's an example. It's the CE 3.00 drivers for the Lucent Technologies ORiNOCO Gold (802.11b)

Windows CE Compatiblity:
Windows CE 2.11 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), Windows CE 3.00 (Handheld PC 2000), Windows CE .net 4.20

Compatible HCL HCD's:
Agere WiLAN Systems ORiNOCO Gold (802.11b), Agere WiLAN Systems ORiNOCO Silver (802.11b), Enterasys RoamAbout (802.11b), Lucent Tecnologies ORiNOCO Gold (802.11b), Lucent Tecnologies ORiNOCO Silver PC24E-H-FC (802.11b), Lucent Tecnologies WaveLAN Silver PC24E-H-ET (802.11b), Proxim Wireless ORiNOCO PC Card Gold (802.11b), Proxim Wireless ORiNOCO PC Card Silver (802.11b)

Devices that the Hardware associated with this file will work on:
Casio Cassiopeia PA-2400U (Handheld PC 2.0), Fujitsu Intertop CX310 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), Fujitsu PenCentra 130 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), Hewlett Packard Jornada 680e (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), Hewlett Packard Jornada 720 (Handheld PC 2000), Hewlett Packard Jornada 728 (Handheld PC 2000), IBM Workpad z50 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), NEC MobilePro 700 (Handheld PC 2.0), NEC MobilePro 780 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional), NEC MobilePro 900 (Handheld PC 2000), NEC MobilePro 900 (Windows CE .net 4.20), Sharp Mobilon TriPad PV-6000 (Handheld PC 3.0 Professional)

I don't see NEC MobilePro 790 in there anywhere. It's the same way with all the cards.

That's just because no one has voted for the card used agianst the 790.

You don't ask a PC forum for software that works on a Dell Dimension XPS 5200, you ask for software that works on Windows 7 x64. Windows CE is no different. For some reason new users seem to be somewhat uncomfortable with this distinction.

This is also why I spend half my posts asking people to vote for exupiment in the HCL so that we can harvest this data.
