Does anyone know where I can get hold of some AA rechargables with solder tags?

Not enough space for batteries with caps on them, plus heat issues soldering them.

Just another thought to consider when soldering isn't an option: http://cgi.ebay.com/Conductive-Wire-Glue-Paint-NO-Soldering-Iron-Gun-Solder-/330496097963?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf31a3eab

It has worked for me in many instances...even when connecting ICs to a PCB...so much easier than soldering....

Thanks Rich,
the old batteries appear to be stuck together with a similar compound.

My other concern is the thermistor rating, and using different capacity cells. If the modern cells don't get as hot, how can the thermistor regulate overcharging?

Do you know of any other websites that give advice for calculating the thermistor rating, etc.

You would need to know the characteristics of the original cells and then compare them with the new cells first. Then it might be possible to adjust the PTC of the termistor or actually change it out for one that would insure cutoff before overcharging. Luckily most cell specifications are not that critical...that is there is quite a bit of tolerance in their acceptable rated zone built in.

AFAIK it's 55 deg C for the thermistor. The cells are widely believed to be 1000mah. or perhaps 900mah.

I do have some new cells that are approximately the same capacity, but they haven't got solder tags. I would prefer to use like-for-like, to avoid the problems mentioned. Finding 1000mah cells with solder tags seems almost impossible to find these days.

Umm... nice in theory.

But there have been reports of others who tried this, after a while it wrecked their machine.

But I shall try it with the batteries I already have, The body of the (old) batteries is the same length as battery with caps. So there maybe just enough space if I solder to the side of the caps with the minimum of solder. Certainly cheaper to wreck these than the hard to source tag variety.

One word in making things fit: Grinder!

Interesting idea.

Dremel comes out of top drawer.

Yay!

Job done, and without destroying a single component.

Job #2:

find a way to fill in scratches on a touch screen. (used with a stylus)

Try simple furniture wax and a soft cotton rag. Sometimes just a simple new screen protector will give it a "like new" appearance.

You really have to be careful about putting anything on a capacitive type screen or you mess with the electronics. Most HPCs use resistive screens however, which is much more forgiving.
