isn't there a program just to back up the entire contents of the ROM, like when you reflash a PPC?. if there's such a thing, maybe one forum user can make a backup and maybe another forum user may stumble upon it and incidentally apply it to it's own MP, rendering it fully usable. I'm not saying it'll happen, i'm just saying it might

Even if there is a way to make a ROM dump, such ROM backups are usually protected so that they will only re-install to the unit they were dumped from. It's a copyright protection issue - don't want people taking ROM images from other units with an upgraded OS and not pay MickySoft their cut and all.....

ivantam, about the default folders in internal flash: i haven't got the slightest idea as mine is second hand too and they have been deleted.
so i'd be very interested, especially if someone can send them to me!

hello, caheo mentioned that he deleted 2 folder in INTERNAL DISK .......

i also wonder if it is relevant or not, hard reset should be able to restore all files at all.

since i left my mp 900 at home, i have to check my firmware version later.

and caheo's problems are really new to all of us.

yes caheo's and my problems are quite shocking. it has always been the first rule that if something goes wrong and a soft reset, etc won't solve it, you'll certainly be fine with a hard reset. however, this problem cannot be solved by a hard reset. tough...
the internal disk files can't be restored by a hard reset. this internal flash is totally independent of hard resets..

but ours isn't the first case, i've read someone else had problems, i think he solved it by sending the unit in to NEC. possibly he still had a warranty... i do not have any... and i live in hungary, very far from NEC. and i'm not sure if NEC is still willing to repair units that are out of warranty.. for 1000$ maybe. so we really shouldn't send it in, the rom reflash can be easily done by the user.

i'm waiting curiously (and hoping) which rom version you have!

oh my god~~~~~

a hour before, i ran my pocketdos so as to play "the ancient land of ys", suddenly, the screen freezed and can't perform soft reset .....

so i removed the main battery only, and put it back, and press power on.

lucky, the machine perform hard reset itself (it's not normal, right???).

so i think it's ok, and then i started to install the softwares back ......

however, it continue to freeze for no reason again and again, and i have to remove the main battery again and again.

i even performed the factory suggested hard reset several times (that's remove the backup battery also)

no luck at all..... still not working.

and the worse thing is .... now, it can't even boot up when perform the hard reset~~~~~

it's freezed in the startup NEC screen ....

my rom ruined???

what can i do next???

yes there is a way to make the dump, i've already done it.
but what you're saying is true. i don't want to try to restore another 900's rom to my device, but getting the right files out of it. that would be enough for me. my biggest worry is how i will be able to extract the files. i'm going to need some help on this and i hope i can get it from where i got the dump tool too. if i'm able to do this, i'll do it for caheo too

oh my god~~~~~

........... i won't say the things i'm thinking now (too rude words)

the best you can do is to send your unit in to NEC as you can't even perform a rom upgrade this way... it looks like the bootloader or whatever is damaged.
are you still in warranty?

my god, the guy on the other forum had his rom corrupted in this very same way: a software lock up then a hard reset after repeated soft resets, then his rom got corrupted... though not as seriously as this...

in my case, if i can't even boot the machine up.

can i still perform rom flashing as you suggested (if we can get the right rom), by using compactflash card and hot key to bypass the normal booting ....???

i also lived outside USA ...... and out of warranty~~~

i like my machine..... very much~~~

oh i see you didn't even have a chance to soft reset.. yes it isn't normal. mine did it right after i got it.. and this might be the cause for my problem too??

me too out of warranty and at the end of the world. (where do you live btw?)

i'm afraid that you can't reflash it. you need a working machine for that if you want to see the steps needed for the rom upgrade look at this topic: http://pocketpcmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14330

oh maybe you can do a reflash via serial (or usb?) cable (IF your bootloader is still intact), but i don't know and you'd need a rom image for that that isn't the official upgrade as it uses the CF... (only the CF?)

i hope they will help you!! though i don't think it will be a cheap option...

i can feel your pain, as i too do like my 900, though i got it only some days ago..... i'm starting to fear that this problem will get more widespread... how long have you had your machine?
