Nec MobilePro 780

Hi guys, I'm going to purchase a Nec MobilePro 780 soon and have some questions about it. Please help me out.

1) It won't come with the default serial-PC cable; will I be able to connect it to my desktop with a general one from a store?
2) Any other synchronization options?
3) Is it possible to upgrade it to the MobilePro 790 (re-flash the OS)?
4) Is it possible to connect a common COM mouse?

1) no you won't. you need to get the original serial cable, or (2)) use infrared (infrared adapters are cheap if you don't have one)
2) again: infrared, and lan/wlan (but you need to sync via infrared or serial before being able to use lan/wlan)
3) yes but not by reflashing but by acquiring a 790 rom chip.
4) no

Thanks for the answers. I have a few more, though .

1) Will the MobilePro 780 synchronise with ActiveSync 3.7.1?
2) Will it send/receive files to/from my HP iPAQ hx2110 (Windows Mobile 2003 SE) via IrDA?
3) So, the serial port is for PC connection only, right?

1. Better yet it will sync with 3.8 (but not 4.0)
2. Yes, it should over IR - I'm not is a position to test myself, but it should
3. You can use the serial port to connect to a limited range of printers as well as Modems, cellular phones and other computers via terminal sessions.

2.- about the IR sync. yes, they can. but you need to download a program that uses OBEX as the transfer protocol (Total commander, EzOBEX), because WM2003SE uses it as default, if you just plain try it with the infrared receieve option in the explorer, it won't work.

i meant not for syncing, but for filetransfering between WM2003SE PPC and H/PCs

One other thing...different people have reported different problems trying to sync their 780s using infrared, particularly USB infrared adapters.

So if you have an open serial port on your desktop, I recommend obtaining the Jeteye ESI-9680 IR adapter. Just configure your COM port to the maximum baud rate of your Mobilepro and you'll be cooking. Since it is on the end of a cable, it is easy to allign your 780's IR window to the IRD as well, not like when you use a stubby USB IRD device plugged into the back of your desktop.

And, on eBay they are pretty cheap...anywhere from $5-$10.

Still you might want to check with Usedhandhelds.com. They had some S1424-12S serial cables going pretty cheaply a while back.

I think they have all or most of the accessories. Or you can use IRDA for synch. The MP780 has both CF and PCMCIA slots, so you can use CF memory cards or accessories, and 16-bit PC cards. Check the HCL before buying.
