If you had a supercomputer at your house, what would you use it for?
SETI (and the residual heat can warm the basement (winter's coming ) ).
Good idea Except the cost for the heat will be high if the point was to only warm up your house
Yes, SETI and BOINC in general will surely get a boost. Edited by stingraze 2011-11-05 1:37 AM

| I never heard of Minecraft until this post and just took a look at it. Looks like a fun little game. Can you play it offline? |

| Yeah, there is an offline mode. I've been playing it for more than a year. Even though the game looks very rudimentary, it eats resources because of how massive everything is. Worlds are infinite. I would suggest 512MB VRAM, 2GB RAM and a 2.2GHz CPU for running it smoothly. When I fix my server (just level corruption ) I'll see if I can make it available to you guys.
Here's a list of hardware configurations tested for Minecraft high settings. The lower in the list you go, the newer the Minecraft version: Hardware Performance |

| Same here MobilePro Master. And the worst part is I can't put it down.
Would love to see you get a server up and running! |

| I fixed my server, and it's running again, but I think we need to start a new thread because right now we're still hijacking poor stingraze's thread. I'll make a new thread if my parents let me let people on who aren't from school.
Let me know if you get the game, Rich. When I mentioned those specs, that is for high settings. I play with only 128MB VRAM on low settings with a mod that increases my FPS by optimization and it is quite smooth. |

| It's interesting to see how some people want to use a supercomputer for games. PS3 was considered to be a supercomputer game console when it came out. And in fact, I was so fascinated by it that I installed Fedora 13 when I could officially do it.
I guess supercomputing and games are very related. |

| Obviously the only true use of a supercomputer is a Doom II tournament
The old SC at work has 8192 GB RAM and 1992 CPU's.
There is a newer 42.9 TeraFlops super computer too. It has 2840 Dual core CPU's (5680 cores ), 192 TB disk space.
Anyone for Doom II?
p.s.
There are 218 Gigaflops in a PS3
42900000000000000 flops (42.9TF )
-------------------------
218000000000 flops (218 GF )

Is that the year or the quantity? |

| Let me know next time you're in London
Though I now have some concerns over your mental state if you dream of being exposed to all that noise and all that cold air! |
