I know what SAS stands for and read the Wiki pages on it...but have zero practical experience with them.

I recently obtained a few 146GB SAS drives that run at 10K rpm. What are they good for in practical purposes....I already have a 160GB SATA drive in my desktop computer running at 7200 rpm. Would getting an adapter to run one of these instead make any sense?

Or are these primarily for servers?

Are they 3gig or 6gig? SAS or nearline?

If they're SAS then a proper HBA will be 'specive. If you have enough to make an initiated storage array and an enclosure then they can be fun for a few minutes (but so can iSCSI and a linux box if you want a cheap thrill). If you're actually just looking for some cheap storage, eBay them and use the revenue to get a couple of 3TB SATA 6gig drives and a GPT ready RAID controller.

A loaded multipath SAS array will spin your electricity metre.
