I bought a J540 on ebay and I am wondering how to connect to the internet via a Infrared connection. Do I need any programs or something for this?

You would have to establish an infrared Activesync connection with the desktop and then connect via the desktop...

You can't connect directly via infrared...unless you have an infrared modem of some type...of which there are very few....maybe something like this:

http://www.3jtech.net/infrared_modem.htm or this http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php/27863-FS-56k-V90-Infrared-Modem-for-PDA

Or if you have a laptop with an infrared port, you could use it with a dial-up connection by creating a new network connection with the J540 via infrared port, allowing it to control the built in modem on your laptop..

If you have a cellphone with an infrared port, you could use it using the generic modem driver from this site: http://www.hpcfactor.com/downloads/irda/

It was built for Psion, but I remember getting mine to work with the J-720. Good recall, Rich, about the unholy internet sharing between the laptop and the CE device. Years ago, I finally got that to work (with AS 3.8, users had to use a special proxy app, right? Something that came up in the systray?). While I did connect, I did feel sort of silly surfing three inches away from a machine that was already surfing

Addendum: I think the most transportable workaround is to carry an infrared-ready phone. Probably could be picked up for 10-20 USD, and if your service was GSM, you could just switch out the SIM chip when needed. I used a Nokia 6100 for such things--very small phone, smaller than an infrared modem, and obviously, more portable.

. . . since the 540 is one of those dreaded Pocket PCs.
