I have resigned to the fact that a ce 2.0 device will not be able to host a gprs card. However, is it possible to connect a mobile phone with cprs capabilities to a ce 2.0 machine and have it surf? I have not bought either a card yet nor a phone...

You should be able to connect one over infrared with minimal issue.

To give you a little more info, a lot of the mid to higher end Nokias should have an IR port (eg the Nokia 6820, 3620, 6600, 6620). It's pretty easy to set up once you have all the necessary parts.

Yes it is, but not all handsets will work with the GenIrDA driver natively, and need INT strings.

I was able to connect my J720 using GenIR modem to my Nokia 6600, but not with my latest 9500... However, the 6600 is the last of the Symbian Series60 smartphone from Nokia which uses infrared ports, the latest Symbian 7.x nokia phones no longer employs infrared and uses bluetooth. So might as well shop for the not-so-latest models...

And save yourself some money, very true. I know for a fact that the Nokia 3620 and 6820 will work, as well as the Ericsson t39m (which is an awesome phone but sadly lacks GSM 850 for here in Canada) - I've tried them all.

Thanks for the advice! Do all of the phones mentioned have gprs? Do any phones come with a cable?

pengyou, you'd better use infra for that, not a cable.. can be problematic.

Please, Please, Please submit any compatible IR phones into the HCL with details in the notes section, the cell phone area doesn't cover the latest models.

good idea
though i won't be able to give information on the latest models.
and the initialization string (if it's needed) can vary depending on some things... but if we can give info about it in the notes section, that will be fine

I've not quite worked out why you've not spent time on the HCL submission form already actually, you've been here long enough

I've received them, thanks.
Was the IR driver you used with them the HPC:Factor Gen IrDA one? (specifically referring to the H/PC Pro t39m entry) or just the Jornada one?

oh at last it works

erm, hpc pro? i'm sure i didn't submit it for hpc pro as i don't have a hpc pro device and don't know of any friend who has one using with the t39
just to clarify, i submitted the t39 as compatible with hpc2000 and ce.net (and me45 with hpc2000)
i didn't use the gen irda on the jornada 72x, as i can select the irda modem by default there. but i can't on the MP900 (neither on hpc2000 nor on ce.net), so i did use your driver there and it worked (too lazy to do the reg editing manually )
