I booted up 'Sarge' this morning and mounted the FAT16 portion of my CF card with 'mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /home' and used nano to write out and save a .txt document to the card. Later I used Pocket Word to open and read the document. Not exactly revolutionary of course but still it's fun. :-)

That's great.....

Sounds like your Debian setup is actually quite usable and functional......

Although would be good if you could get X and a DM running too.....

It's fun to play with but in the end not very practical. I still enjoy it and that's all that matters.

I had a pretty productive morning. I modified sources.list to include the Debian archives - ran' apt-get update', 'apt-get upgrade' and tried to install elinks. That attempt failed because of dependencies. I then got lucky and was able to install another text browser called w3m. I then visited Google and HPC Factor.

Thanks. I should mention that w3m has an additional facet of displaying inline images (w3m-img) and tabbing. I think most of us in the forum are aware that running linux will lose all of your personal settings when you reboot and I will add the caveat that you can reboot to unreadable screens, either too dark or too light that you can adjust with ALT +</>. On occasion you may also lose the touchpad and cursor and will have to use Tab on the appropriate screens to regain it's use. Sometimes nothing is amiss when you reboot.
Now that I can install other software I have a variety of things I may try with my 'toy.' ;-)

Thanks for reminding everyone about limitations....

Had the issue of losing personal settings when you reboot when using linux on a Jornada 7xx.....

There was hope for some time that someone would produce the ROM boards that allow one to keep the linux install intact upon reboot as well as allow to properly suspend, etc. But unfortunately, the guy never was able to get them produced.

So it goes....

Wow, great progress! Thanks for sharing all this. It would be great to have an article about this in the support and tutorials section

About the losing personal setting issue.. With the J7xx, this was easily solved by simply doing a backup using the built in HP Backup tool before booting Linux and restoring afterwards. Is there a Backup Software that works the same way for the Jornada 820?

It does have a backup utility but I've never used it since I never used my device for anything other than fun. I may try to find the Click! USB utility that I d/l from this great site, install it again, do a full backup to the FAT 16 portion of my CF card and then try to do a system restore.
I installed mc (Midnight Commander) to my linux system yesterday. It makes navigating the file system much easier. I have not yet been able to get w3m to display images but will continue to work on it.

Unfortunately, not able to edit prior posts....

So, to clarify, I was referring to losing settings and other info in linux not WinCE......

I did not worry about WinCE.....

But understand now that Mjolnir was referring to WinCe....
