Got tired of plugging serial cables in the back of my old computer, so I made a simple switch box so I could leave all cables intact and just select which I wanted to use when I want to use it.

Cost:

Project box $9
9 pole 4 position switch $3.75
RS232 connectors $2.50 each
Knob .50 cents (used)

Total cost: <$25 total
Time to build: About 4 hours - biggest time spent using mototool to carve out rs232 holes in the back...soldering wires was only about 40 minutes. Painting it black was about 5 minutes minus drying time.

Finished project below

It is 100% functional...but ugly as hell inside....schematic is simple however...9 wires from the input to the common on the switch, 9 wires from each of the 4 outputs to the corresponding serial port.

I actually used 4 different colored wires, yellow, green, red, black (telephone wire) to each port. Then I marked each wire with a paper label so I wouldn't get them mixed up with the proper pin, labels #1-9.

In retrospect, I think if I did it over, I would use a 9 wire ribbon cable, only separating each wire enough to reach the pin for soldering...that way I would know pin 1 by the colored wire, and then solder each subsequent wire in order to the connector.

WOOT...haven't heard that in years....

What fun! RS232...my all-time favorite connection

Hey, will your set-up power marital aids as well? With a dual approach, you could mass-market these things, Rich. "Power your devices and your spouse at the same time! Continuous privacy--anti-streetlight dimming is included at no extra charge!"
