| Shamed, I have finally given up WEP and while I know that H/PCs won't do WPA, I have an old Sony Vaio Picturebook that has a 16-bit PCMCIA slot (running on W2K/Puppy Linux) and I'd like to know if there is a card that will work and do WPA.
I've tried a Netgear WG511 v2 that supposedly could do WPA in Linux at least, but no joy.
Any other hardware suggestion?
Thanks,
Jake

| If I remember correctly, if you can find a WPA enabled flash for it, any Prism 2.5 chip is capable of WPA 1 (not 2), you just have to find the firmware or flash it with a reference BIN. |

| Why not just buy one of those cheapo USB wifi sticks for your picturebook? |

| Many thanks for all your quick posts.
While I still haven't figured out the W2K angle, with Puppy Linux 4.3, I was able to find a wpa_supplicant plugin and incredibly, the Netgear WG511 v2 was able to use WPA. I don't think W2K will be as generous, but I am on-line.
Puppy Linux says that if you use an ndis wrapper instead of the linux driver, you can even give the WPA capability to the Orinoco Gold. Who knew?
Thanks again. Glad that I could put one of my thousands of unused PCMCIA card back to work

| I feel so lost, though, without internet on any of my HPCs. A kind soul here had suggested a separate WEP router for HPC use, but it's not same, no more instant on, jump on the 'net. When the warranty runs out on my Galaxy S5, I'll root it, install the Barnacle app, which makes the phone into a free, open wifi hotspot, and let the J-720 lick its wounds there.

You can still have this experience with a few CE 5 and 6 devices that have built-in WiFi, but nearly all the suspendable ones are keyboardless. |

You already are Rich.
You could always put Linux on the HPC and solve the problem the same way that Puppy Linux does |

| I'm rich...but not wealthy...cool dog.
My Netgear wireless router allows me to have an open wifi signal, yet control who can access it by having an allowable device connection list. Plus if you turn off broadcasting, then most people can't even see it.
I realize it won't stop true hackers...but I've never encountered any of those people before. |

That is because they are true hackers. You'll never notice |
