Hi, i am getting a jornada 720 free from my uncle ( he doesnt use it ) and have a few questions

1. I know that the jornada has only a rj11 port, isnt there some kinda convertor so i can plug an rj45 cable in?

.. If not is there a card that plugs into the pcmcia slot?

2. Does any pcmcia wireless card work or only the Cisco AIRONET 340

3. Is there any way to upgrade the bootrom to a newer wince so i can play mp3 mpeg etc etc

4. Is there any portable linux i can use to do the above? and how will it run

5. How well will wince 4.0/5.0 run on a jornada

6. What about WinXP Embedded, how will that run? Has anyone loaded it onto a jornada?

7. Is there a firefox availble for portable systems? / how well will it run

Thankyou for your help with the noobish questions ive been googling my eyes out all night and cant seem to get any decent answers

Welcome,

1. RJ11 = Modem
RJ45 = Network
If for some reason you're doing a custom phone bodge job, then yes you can.
2. See the HCL (Hardware in the top navigation)
3. What does bootrom have to do with playing mp3 and mpeg. You can play both of those as well as DivX on it... so again, what has multimedia got to do with the boot sector?
4. Yes, there is a new one in development and by swapping between a CF/Main RAM - not ROM.
5. It wont
6. As above
7. Nope, Minimo's being worked on by the community at this forum

and see the downloads section.

I think you need to do some more research.

uhm, the answers will mostly be encouraging but not always

1. no, no, they're a different kind of animal.. rj11 is for the built-in dial-up modem, rj45 is for ethernet, and the jornada doesn't have that built-in.

1. yep, a lot, lan and wlan cards too

2. nope. a lot of wlan cards work.. http://www.hpcfactor.com/hcl
i wouldn't recommend the cisco 340, nor the 350, btw.

3. no, no way, it isn't a flashable rom. however you can play mp3 out of the box with win mediaplayer, and you can install betaplayer, pockettv, wodeon, etc. for video. a lot of good audio players are available too.

4. yeah, just search for it, but it isn't really an option for now as the power management isn't too good (an understatement actually)

5. it won't, at all

6. no way

7. no, firefox would never run fine with its memory requirements but you can use rdp if that suits you and you're desperate for firefox..
anyway, only your options are the built-in IE and netfront 3 (this one isn't built-in)

8. you can use adobe acrobat reader

Thankyou for the speedy reply and for not being angry at me for asking stupid questions

As for the bootrom thing , i thought maybe the software might be too old to run the latest formats

I think the jornada has a pdf viewer on it tho i dont remember exactly

-----

Yeh i should do more researching but im sorta drunk right now

it is a jornada 728, hence the different design & looks if you go to my page http://izemize.fw.hu/hpc.php, you can see more pics of it.. and of a jornada 720 too!

oh and pdf viewer isn't built-in but you can download it from here. just don't overwrite mfcce300.dll if it asks (C:Amie, does it still do that? i have no idea)
get the dll from my page.

The Jornada doesn't have a PDF viewer on it.

A bootrom is an EPROM (NVRAM) area located against the motherboard of a comptuer system that is used to initialise the system start up that ultimatly leads to the mounting of a boot strap from a mountable volume and the loading of an OS of some description.

cmonex,

I released Reader 2.0 weeks ago with stubs by the executable.

yes of course, they can run from ram or a compact flash card
if you install them to CF, you don't have to reinstall most of them, if you do a hard reset. however a hard reset isn't the equivalent of a simple power off, so don't worry
you could check out hp.com about some basic stuff you need to know. just do a search on jornada 720, download the manual for it, and there are some stuff on their page too.

Yea, no worries.

The 720 has no formal ROM upgrade path. There never was one from hp. Just an attempt to get a new chip made with FlashROM on it for linux ports - but that's been static for years, with a reprise in mumbling every year or so.

I find DivX acceptable for the capabilities of the device. There is a review on the slab, but it's not due to go out until the 25th. In the mean time, see the PocketDVD 1.1 review for some general insight.
