It clearly says on the package that it's a Microsoft Java VM for Windows CE. I am really intrigued about this now, I never even heard of this.
Are you able to pull the bin's off of the CD?
Allegedly there was a Windows CE Java SDK (i.e. compiler ) floating around at the end of 1997, but it wasn't released anywhere to my knowledge. |

Here is a picture and list of the files that are copied to the h/d when the Java application is unpacked, a portion of an included text file: "1.5 Copy all the files in c:\jvmce into the \windows directory of your HP Jornada. These files are (14 in all ) :
Ce_awt.dll
Ce_irda.dll
Ce_local.dll
Ce_math.dll
Ce_net.dll
Ce_zip.dll
Cejbmp.dll
Cejvm.dll
Jcls.dll
Jdbgdll.dll
Verifier.dll
Jview.exe
hello.class
frame1.class"
So far I haven't managed to 'sync' my J820, for various reasons, to either my old Win 98 or Win 2000 laptops. The picture is of the files in a folder on a pcmcia h/d mounted in my little Win 95. I may d/l Activesync 3.1 and try it next.

I finally broke good old WinME out of the junk pile and got her to connect to my J820. I haven't tried to install the java machine or any of the extras on the 2nd cd and it will probably tomorrow or the day after before I get to fool with it anymore. "Dog" wasn't impressed. | Windows Millennium, ha, that takes me back. I brought that and tried to get a refund on it because it was so awful. This was before Microsoft's EULA/break seal was torn apart by the courts, so Microsoft got away with my money on that occasion.
I moved to NT4 as a direct result of it.
I dropped you a PM with a link and an upload code that you can use to send it directly to the web server. Please give it a try. |

| The java files are sent as a .zip - I'll see about the other .exes (Starfish, etc.) later if you wish. Fred |

| Fred,
Legend, thank-you.
So it's the version 1.0.0 release. It seems there was a 1.0.1 release in the very short window before they pulled it. I am also assuming that there are additional files that were available in the SDK version that was on Microsoft.com (possibly with SH3 runtime files). So if anyone can find that, it would be a sensation.
Anyway. Anyone else who wants to play with it, can now get it in the SCL. |

| Thank you for uploading this!
I was hoping there would be class files for everything, since there's not even a good way to find out which parts of standard Java it supports, which version and if there are any CE specific interfaces. Sadly I have little hopes that the SDK will ever surface unless anyone can get in tough with someone who worked on it. But never say never.
Anyway, thanks again for archiving this! |

Taking a pure guess. My suspicion is that if we can get hold of the 1997/1998 Visual J++ release, the SDK will be on that CD. Possibly it's even on Visual Studio 5 media. We could probably extract the patches from Platform Builder too.
Sadly as the original URL's aren't on the WBM, unless we find someone who has it archived, we're screwed. It was so short lived as a public release that even I didn't know about it! |

| Great idea! I downloaded Visual J++ from 1998 from https://winworldpc.com/download/c3bb452e-40c3-89c3-b711-c3a4e280a613
Couldn't manage to install on my barebones XP VM, I guess some components were missing. I did install the MS JVM though and dug around the class files, very interesting. Lots of Windows specific interfaces.
Makes me wonder if Windows CE supported all the features as well. Digging around the CD I found no CE specific Files. According to some news site i found, the CE Java SDK was released in 1997, so this Visual J++ release is definitely after that.
I tried WBM another time, maybe the link you had was just mistyped, sadly it wasn't. This is the only MS website that mentions Java for CE, and it links to the same site, but it's a dead end:

| That's right. It seemed to last from 11/1997 - 05/1998. Very short. I suspect they realised the use of JIT on CE was a chronic problem due to RAM limits. That or the Sun lawsuit started up and they decided to minimise their exposure.
If we could find out the file name of the SDK installer, it would be a start.
Can anyone actually remember how to write in Java AWT? |

| Press release:
https://news.microsoft.com/1997/09/29/microsoft-announces-windows-ce-toolkits-for-visual-basic-visual-c-and-visual-j/
This suggests it made it to being a boxed product!
https://www.cnet.com/products/windows-ce-tool-kit-for-visual-j-plus-plus-no-doc-tc3/specs/
OK I might have a lead! Does anyone have an FTP account on Beta Archive? Text search "Windows CE" on here https://www.betaarchive.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11771&start=150
It gies "Disc 14 - July 1998 - Microsoft CE Toolkit for Visual Basic 5.0, Windows CE Toolkit for Visual C++ 5.0, Windows CE Toolkit for Visual J++ 1.1" which suggests they have it on their FTP service somewhere.
Edit: It is to be found at...
