I think I killed my Jornada 728 because of a bluetooth adapter - is this possible? Is this something that can happen? Everything worked fine (for years) found a bluetooth adapter (PC-card adapter), tried it nothing happened and turned the 728 off. And now I try to turn it on again and everything seems dead! Only thing lit is the battery light.
The thing that’s strange is that the center in the back feels warm. Off course I removed the batteries - but nothing still happens.
I have several other Jornada’s, but they are all 720s so that’s a bummer. Maybe a rom switch is the solution? So the rom from 728 to a 720.

Look at the PC card slot pins, check you've not bent one of the power pins onto a data pin.

Yes, you can swap the ROM over, assuming it isn't fried.

Pins are fine - will swap the rom. Think it’s really easy to do correct?

Basically you have a 728 then? Difference in screen? Power management?

Yeah, it is easy. It clips on.

The board revision is higher on the 728, but basically, yes.

Yes it was fried - swapped the board (that is indeed really easy to do) but then I would also not turn on.
Is this something that can happen? Hopefully I can find a 728 board somewhere...

No, it should just work. Are you 100% that the ROM daughterboard was clipped in place properly? The clip can be quite deceptive.

Yes, I tried a different 720 and swapped the 728 rom module in this 720 and the 720 still wouldn't turn on. Then I placed the 720 rom module in the 728 and that worked fine. So the 'machine' is fine - it's the rom module that is fried. Still don't really know why, only thing is that I tried the bluetooth PC-card and after that 'something happened'.
I looked but couldn't find a replacement online (Ebay etc.) so will have to wait if someone is selling a broken 728.

That is very weird!

At least it will be usable as 720 in the interim.

Mega-bummer on the j728 "....burn out at the (not so) OK corral." Too many amps draw leading to memory corruption or overwritten memory by the blue tooth card?

Now we know why they named it "Blue" tooth...

If I may ask, what is the main difference between the J728 and J720...memory size primarily??

More memory, other color case (I like the 720 case more) and battery life should be better (https://www.hpcfactor.com/reviews/hardware/hp/jornada728/)

Awhile back, I bought a 728 ROM card from usedhandhelds.com.
It might be worthwhile to ask if they have any available.

Be aware that backup files (made with the J720/728 backup utility) are ROM board specific. At least, that was my experience. Backups made with the 720 ROM could not be restored to the 728 ROM board. (Therefore, a lot of my J720 software had to be re-installed for use as a J728). I assume backups apply to the specific board ID, rather than to the size of memory (32 MB versus 64 MB). The registration key of some software may also be related to specific board ID.

By the way, I still have a J720 with 728 ROM listed on ebay. (The listing includes a spare 720 ROM board, among other accessories. The included software and backup file is for the 728 ROM board.)

Good idea! Will do that. I know that I need to reinstall everything (I also needed to do that today because of the fried J728) - that's not really a problem

Update: usedhandhelds.com does have some spares. $75,- (ex. shipping which is $25,-). So $100,-
Is it worth it? Have to think about that....

Yes, don't think I'm going to buy it. I know that the J728 got more memory etc. but $100 is a lot.
