Easy Devuan J720 install from disk image!!

FYI All,

Original "working" 2Gb (64Mb rom... modify Params.txt to mem=32 for stock J720) image is being again available/hosted after ArchiMark pointed out "kernal panic" glitch with the recent 4Gb image on his CF card.

I have also uploaded a 4Gb (32Mb) CF specific img file that I have double tested on San Disk UltraII 4Gb CF card. Problem now is I'm out on vacation along the Northern California coast and uploading via ATT dsl which is impossibly slow!!! Hopefully no corruption occurs during the "hours" it may take to upload. But, one way or another... I will "Get'er Done"! These images really do work great...

Just downloaded the new files.....

Curious as to why the 2GB file (597MB) is larger than the 4Gb (402MB) file?

Seems like it would be the other way round......but what do I know.....

Anyway, thanks for the files and will test them out and then report back.....

The 2 Gb file was on an old sd card probably with old deleted but not erased files so disk image is of everything on the disk (all those bible study files...Ignore the Stormy Daniels stuff... nothing to see here, move along, these aren't the droids you're looking for, etc. So no way any inappropriate "adult content", of course!). It's kinda difficult to sneak these things past you and your inquisitive nature.

Realizing that, I completely wiped each 4Gb sd/cf card before burning those images, thus the smaller size. Happy to finally get them uploaded... took hours. Enjoy (whatever you find)!

Trouble in Paradise: just tested the 4Gb zip file downloaded from my hosting site and ran into ArchMark's "kernel panic" issue.

So either the upload is faulty or the compression is faulty. The 2 Gb version was verified working by others, so I will try that to troubleshoot whether the uploading from the boonies had side effects if any. https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D4898663_09915533_73375 is where you can find it.

Meanwhile, I'm deleting soon the 4Gb zip images till I figure things out, so I don't recommend downloading them Presently. Was burning to/ using a 16Gb San Disk Ultra but kernel is in a panic!!

Yes, had same issue with the 4GB file.....

Was busy with other issues today, so, didn't report this until now.....

Will try your 2GB file....soon......

Looks like the slow uploading is messing things up as my recent 2Gb zip is failing as well!!! I'm gonna stop hosting until I get back from vacation and have fast uploading. Sorry about that!

Well, I'm the one who panicked! Turns out those images DO WORK on SD cards... (and at least on some hi speed San Disk ultraII CF cards). For example, I downloaded the hosted 2Gbimage zip , extracted it, used Win32Imager and burned it to a 32GB SD Card and everything is working! I should NOT have deleted them, now I have to upload again.

Anyway, if you have a SD Card to CF adapter, try any SD Card 2Gb or larger... should do the trick. I'm going to try the downloaded 4Gb image now... will get back to you. Do try an SD Card!

Addendum: 4GB CF image works with micro SD Card (32 GB)!... so the images are good, CF cards may have issue with the usb to CF adapter (mine is rather old and maybe too slow for file transfer... I'll look for the other one I have)

And I believing what you say, deleted all the files I had downloaded earlier, thinking that they don't work........

Although I was using CF card, not a SD card, as I don't have a SD to CF adapter.....

And I did have a problem with the 4GB file.....

So, will download the 4GB file again and try it with my CF card....

FYI if you have a SD card to PCMCIA adapter it should work (might need to remove j720 cf card so boots properly...probably not necessary though).

Downloaded files.....now trying to flash CF card.....crossing my fingers.....

Meanwhile, dig a little deeper, they say......found a SD to CF adapter card....in a drawer....

I just noticed a larger rootfs.tar.bz2 file from late last year... about twice the size I have used in my images. Going to make some images with it... more modules I guess.

Meanwhile, I started flashing last evening late....so, just got up now and checked status....

Unfortunately, process failed again....message says, "Unmount failed, invalid drive"....

Maybe I should try another CF card.....or SD card in the adapter......or on another computer......

Hmmm.....seems odd....card is a fairly new SanDisk card.....

Think I will try using the program you've been using and see what happens....

All my various SD and microSD cards ALL "burn" a working Devuan image , as do some CF cards. At least one CF 16Gb FAILS EVERYTIME , not only "burning" from image, but even using Stefan's wiki method using the tar.bz2 file... so something is amiss with it. Therefore, I recommend using SD/microSD cards with SD to CF adapter (about $10 on Amazon or Ebay) until this gets figured out. Also, use Win32Imager or Etcher after unzipping the image..
