Complete, in case you didn't notice, this forum is mainly for HPC users ...

So doom3 cannot run on your desktop ... you may want to specify your desktop specs if you are expecting any replies at all ...

it shows specs in the log output, and it should run, however, in the log it mentions something about your video card not being able to support required options.
I believe q3 also has a safe (unaccelerated) or software mode to have the processor do all the work. try that, otherwise, download updated videocard drivers.

Q3 is not that picky for video, it runs on my 700mhz p3 laptop with an S3 8mb semi-3d video, thats not too hard to beat now is it?

I have started poking around the control panel programs to see what I can do. I have found out that I am using:
SONY CPD-220VS on NVIDA GeForce FX 5200 (Microsoft Corporation)
Should that be good enough? How do I "turn on" OpenGL?

You don't!! Sadly, Microsoft didn't package XP with ANY Open GL drivers, so if you use the Microsoft ones, you're stumped.
Go onto NVidia's site and use THEIR drivers, that way, no Open GL problems. Alternitively, if you want to get the max out of your card (esp if you have an ATI card!), search for some tweaked drivers.

download the latest drivers and that should do the trick.

After that you might want to check and see if you got the latest DirectX as well.
start-run and type in dxdiag
the latest version is 9c
http://www.microsoft.com/directx

goodluck.

edit: I read wrong, thought is was quake3 instead of doom3.

dor doom3 you defenately need DirectX9 and the latest nvidia drivers to play it.

Two drivers you should always update. CD/DVD-Burning apps(drivers and firmware) and Video drivers.
I always update when NVidia release. Though you have to be careful with them as they're crafty.
All my systems bar one (Kyro based) use NVidia TNT or higher chipsets. So I just universally roll out new drivers. Every now and then though you get one that they drop support for a specific chipset.

Take the ones on NVidia.com right now, they're missing support for:
TNT2
TNT2 Pro
TNT2 Ultra
TNT2 Model 64 (M64)
TNT2 Model 64 (M64) Pro
Vanta
Vanta LT
GeForce 256
GeForce DDR
GeForce2 GTS
GeForce2 Pro
GeForce2 Ti
GeForce2 Ultra
GeForce2 MX Integrated graphics
Quadro
Quadro2 Pro
Quadro2 EX

Which is most of my graphics cards

It's fun when you puch that out to workstations and half of them reboot at 640x480x4-bit - NOT
