*shrug* I never checked.

For twain, try https://web.archive.org/web/20110216205317/http://www.orpalis.com/products/paperscan

Newer stuff can work with WIA, but that was only introduced with Windows Millennium and pretty much was ignored until Windows 8.

p.s. You owe me a cookie for that ^

What a shame. needs Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.
If I install it, it will slow my whole PC down.
Thank you all the same!
Winamp, it works very well. I notice that it is much lighter!

Edit:
I try to install Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 again. Let's see what happens.

Here I am, here with the news. I have everything installed.
How did it go? Even worse! This program has startup times, double that of HP's program!
Furthermore, if you click on: Scan, PaperScan starts the HP program, since it is unable to scan the document and relies on an external program .... never seen a worse software than this!
I found this out: I tried to figure out what it said, but I couldn't.
The only thing I understand is that since windows 2000 they have introduced
Microsoft Windows Image Acquisition Library v2.0.
https://www.meziantou.net/scan-a-document-with-windows-image-acquisition.htm
I found out where to download the program:
http://vbnet.mvps.org/index.html?code/imageapi/mswaidll.htm
However, there is no exe file for installation. Can you tell me how to install it?

EDIT:
I found that IrfanView also scans documents and is very lightweight and starts up quickly.
However, it seems to use the HP application as well, but only the scan preview interface. I don't know if I have made myself clear.
I would like to try the windows one. But I don't know how to install it.

This is the problem with Twain. It was always crappy like this as the driver often included the scan head app.

WIA Lib 2 is a developer library, not a program. It is for developers to connect to WIA in their code. As I said above, unless your scanner has WIA drivers you CANNOT USE IT. At best it will just load the Twain driver and at worst won't see the scanner.

So the "heavy" app isn't the scan interface, it's some wrapper app provided by hp? You can probably just find the .exe for the scanner app and skip the wrapper utilities completely.

Yes, but I'll tell you more, if I use the HP program, the scanning interface also starts slowly, but if I use IrfanView the scanning interface starts much faster.
Look, bearing in mind that I will hardly ever use the internet, and just to download mail and that's it, I was wondering should I install a firewall?

If you are behind a router, it is already firewalled from the Internet.

Yes, now that I think about it I have the firewall of the router.
Well, continue with the finishing touches.
I think I will make a nice final vido, to thank you also for all the help and patience you have had!

So what are you actually going to do with this machine? You've never actually said? Why did you build it?

I've always used this machine for work, with windows 95.
Now that I've updated it, I can use it even better.
I use it to write in Word, Exel, now I can use the scanner, printer, and see the mail.
Obviously for all the other more complex operations, I will use the modern PC.

Do you hear you remember the Framework problem? Disabling the service solves the problem. But I read that mscorsvw.exe (a.NET optimization that pre-compiles assemblies) uses all the CPU, as it has to finish compiling all assemblies, and once finished the problem shouldn't occur anymore.
He asks me if there is a way to understand if actually after the installation of the Framework he has to finish some particular operation, and then return to normal.
Is there any way to know?

However if I have done all this it is only out of nostalgia for the past and then I am very happy to work with this PC. For all simple operations, this machine is capable of doing the job I use it for very well!

But why do you want a legacy machine when you have a modern one?

The .net precompiler should stop running, yes, make sure you patch .net though or it will do it every time it is updated.

There is no way to tell that I am ware of. It will do it every time new managed code is presented.

Because I have good memories with this IBM. It was my first PC. I like to use it, I work well with it and I'm sure that in 20 years it will still work unlike the modern one, which I will definitely have to change.
As for Framework, I have 2.0 SP2. What patch should I apply and how long will I have to wait for what it is doing to finish. Up in the forum I read that one waited 4 hours, on an old PC.

It seems that mscorsvw.exe has finished working hard after two hours. The CPU is now no longer at 100%.
In any case, I believe that I will deactivate the service for safety.

Ah, that makes sense. A bit of personal nostalgia

In 20 years I imagine that every capacitor in it will have gone dry and burnt out to be honest They are easy enough to replace though, just be careful with the AC ones.
