I'm at last considering a virtual OS install on Win10, something I've never attempted.

My aims are 1) ActiveSync 3.8 2) Outlook 2010 32-bit 3) Word 2.0

Arcane, I know, but I need save Word 1.1 docs to 2.0 format and sync two CE 2.0 devices.

The aims are obscure, but seemingly limited, so I'm willing to go back, OS-wise, as much as it takes.

Also, I'm uncertain if my present Outlook 2010 32-bit install on Win10 can be accessed/used by a virtual install of older OS. If not, how far back can Outlook 2010 go? To Win98? (I also have Outlook 98 somewhere and if fates permit it, I'd be happy to drop a rather lean 2010 .pst into 98's)

Thanks for any links/pointers,
Jake

Not sure if this will help, but I found what seems to be an alternative method:

LegacyFileConverter

http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/legacyfileconverter.html

Supports both DOS version and Windows version of Word and many more file formats, including MS Word for Windows 1.x .

Office 2010 requires XP SP3+

A virtual machine can technically access a pst on the host, but you cannot load a pst concurrently on both systems.

If you upgraded the pst database, you may not be able to open it in older Outlook versions, you would have to export/import.

Use virtualbox, hyper-v won't work for you.

@stingraze and @C:Amie--thank you for the hints/illuminations. Will examine both avenues. I should've known that Outlook 2010 could only go back so far.

Office XP (2002) will run on 98 - 7
If you want Windows 95, then Office 2000 is your best bet.

What OS did you want to use?

I think XP SP3. I already have its iso and your tip that OL 2010 can only go back as far as SP3 makes the decision a little easier.

Also, research tells me that Word 2.0 can be installed in XP if one uses the mapi.dll from Win95, a .dll that I also have in tow.

Since I moved my email archives to Outlook Express Classic (directories are safely saved as individual files rather than in a massive .pst), my .pst is small enough to be easily transferred to the XP install of OL 2010.

I was confused by that as well, and I haven't installed anything yet, so it's all theoretical now. I found the mapi.dll reference on Vetus in the comment section for the 2.0 download.

Thank you for the patch link.

Have a surgical procedure tomorrow AM, so I'll be up early prepping for it. If I feel lucid enough, I hope to kill time by setting up XP in virtualbox.

If I've got XP/AS3.8 installed, would a virtualbox allow AS synching over wifi ? Or is cable-only?

It isn't AS over WiFi, it is AS over IP. Once the partnership is set, as long as it is on the same network and the firewall is open, it can sync. Be careful though as VB defaults to using NAT which will prevent CE from finding the VM. Make sure that the VM has a static IP to lessen the search complexity.

Success and thanks to everyone who gave me help. I'm still having trouble getting vb to recognize my USB-Serial adapter, but when I dug out my old IR adapter, XP already had its drivers in tow. From there, I generated two partnerships with two CE 2.0 devices.

Had an odd experience trying to activate 2010 Outlook. Wouldn't work via internet nor phone (via Activation Wizard), so I found another MS phone number that sent me a link that failed until I finally talked to a human who gave me the code.

Now I'm just dumping my Win10 Outlook .pst into vb's Outlook and successfully syncing from that. Will next look into a LAN sync. Thanks, Chris, for the NAT heads-up.
