Orinoco Silver and Internet on Jornada 720

Hello,

today I was in the mood for some Jornada-networking. I didn't want to have a big setup so I went for wifi. One common Android-phone with an open wlan (only my two clients allowed ) and an Orinoco Silver at the Jornadas' end.

The Jornada had the old Lucent driver installed but I wanted to try the hpfactor-compilation https://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/200145/agere_reference_driver...

I chose CE3.0 with HPC2000 and there was a CAB especially (?) for the 720. But these CABs didn´t install (wrong platform). Has someone experienced similiar problems? I could not fix it.


Then I went on with the already included driver and finally I can use the PocketIE the way god intended to without any retro-proxy

It worked very well, I can now access my own apache2 with a prepared website and I reached the real Internet on a retro-page http://retro.hackaday.com

That is a nice little website to play with - even with an Apple2

There are some more of these pages without SSL but mostly in german language from some older folks that set it up with ham radio stuff during the 2000er years (and forgot)

Maybe we all together should compile a database with stuff like that to have such links ready and available?

Haha, you got duped by "the man". The 720 CAB is binary code for a different CPU architecture, the ARM720. It won't run on the SA1100 aka "ARM".

I recall a thread someone posted last year where they mentioned websites that may work in CE, or ones that don’t use HTTPS.
I tried looking for it but there’s a few different resources still online now

The ideal approach would be some sort of retro proxy that could be set up on the Android phone, allowing both tethering and then stripping the https so PIE can get around. As of now, one needs to tether the phone but go through a proxy on the home computer, which obviously precludes a lot of mobility.

Until a better solution, 68k.news still works well.

Frogfind seems to be kind of a proxy to strip down the websites it discovered. Neat

That's the limit - no gopher:
... "It provides support for the FTP and HTTP 1.0 protocols and handles the details of making and managing socket connections. Gopher, cookies, proxy bypass lists, and persistent URL caching are not supported."

@dl1av I use the Lynx browser most of the time (on Linux).

Since my router doesn't support any Win CE-compatible wireless cards without downgrading security, I don't use my Jornada for browsing any more. I've looked for an ethernet card occasionally, but they're usually in the neighbourhood of $70 CAD, so I haven't bothered.

A little related topic:
I think this wireless bridge by using Raspberry Pi will work by using a regular Ethernet card for Windows CE.
That way you get the latest WiFi security standard.

@Mobi -- When I do need to get on-line with my CE kits, I have a second router (set for 128-bit encryption) cabled to the first router. Not exactly air-tight, but I keep it unplugged until needed, and I wonder (though I'm probably wrong) if the 128-bit router is somewhat hidden behind the WPA2 router, or if it isn't, it might be more difficult to hack.

Also, putty on the J720, telnetting http://lynx.scramworks.net/, allows lynx browsing as well. I'm always impressed how clean putty looks on the 720.

Definitely worth trying.
I only have wifi via mobile now and that excludes all legacy devices that only have a cable ethernet.
