It is indeed intermittent--came back from travels, soft reset the J, and I can confirm the issue.

Thank you, Jake!
Try this,
Soft reset, open total commander
Try opening the folders
If not working, keep device screen on, don’t let it suspend and after about 7 minutes of “uptime” for Windows CE, it should start to work normally.

Your workaround is successful. Question: other than proof-of-concept, is there a difference b/w the stable and the beta in terms of features, etc?

Video of the issue on the MobilePro 900:

I re-ran our testing on Windows CE 2.0 MIPS (NEC MobilePro 700), Windows CE 3.0 MIPS (NEC MobilePro 790), and Windows CE 6.0 x86 (Hewlett Packard t5540) I've confirmed are not affected by the six minute uptime bug. Everything works as normal on aforementioned devices.

Thank you for confirming/replicating the scenario!

2.52 is a minor update but seems to have a lot of little quality of life updates - I attached the major changes below - there are numerous "fixes" too, but it's hard to tell if they're fixed bugs in the 2.52 Series, or fixed from 2.51 (the last stable release)
The major updates are:
Supports FTP via SSL
Bluetooth with WidComm/Broadcom stack
Finger Friendly Touch Distances (icons spaced further apart to assist with finger touch basically)
(I think, but don't quote me) - single tap to navigate folders instead of double tap is also available as an option.
Below I've attached every single line entry of "new" items, but they're mainly a yawner compared to what I listed above.
Show spoiler...
09.08.10 Added: Show error message when connecting with /user: parameter (see below) and network connection already existed with other name
26.07.10 Added: Button bar: cd command now also supports user name, e.g. cd \\server\share /user:username (user needs to turn off device first if already connected)
11.06.10 Added: Show dialog to set tab widths also in CE version, store name width for 2 window mode (in palm/pocketpc mode, it's stored for single window width)
08.06.10 Added: New internal command to show/hide attributes in date/time column: 40049 (note that the column width is NOT auto-adjusted)
08.06.10 Added: New internal command to show/hide hidden and system files: 40048 (stored in registry: Configuration -> HiddenSystem)
28.04.10 Added: Adjust widths of file and button properties to screen width
23.04.10 Added: New internal commands to rotate screen: 40046: Portrait/Landscape right, 40047: Portrait/Landscape left
23.04.10 Added: Show extra space around button bar and top bar in same color as button bar background
23.03.10 Added: Delete function: make "No" the default: Go to \\\registry\HKCU\Software\Ghisler\CECmd\Configuration, create new DWORD value DeleteDefNo with value 1
23.03.10 Added: Finger friendly distances can be set individually in the registry (Hdelta, HDeltaTop and HDeltaIcon)
23.03.10 Added: Finger-friendly vertical icon distances can be set in the font dialog (only when "Finger friendly distances" enabled in main dialog)
23.03.10 Added: Support for finger-friendly vertical distances in file lists and current path
21.12.09 Added: Allow to pass two dirs to TC/CE via command line
21.12.09 Added: Special menu instead of separate buttons for updir, go to parent and swap panels
05.10.09 Added: Move button in button bar to other position via new menu item in context menu
04.10.09 Added: Show state of the following internal commands in button bar: View mode (40015-40017), Hide files in ROM (40022), Single click mode (40045)
04.10.09 Added: New internal command 40045 to toggle single click start option (on/off)
17.08.09 Added: New button command 40044 to show/hide the on-screen keyboard
03.08.09 Added: Button "Add new Button" in button bar because WM6.5 doesn't support drag&drop any more
31.07.09 Added: PageUp/Down buttons to new selection bar
27.07.09 Added: Selection button bar: select all, inverse selection, select group, select all with same type, ctrl and shift buttons
26.06.09 Added: FTP: Use new method to handle directories: call CWD /absolute_subdir followed by command instead of LIST /absolute_subdir -> works with spaces in names!
25.06.09 Added: 64x64 pixel main icon for hires devices
25.06.09 Added: An icon size of 0x0 pixels can be chosen now, to turn off icons. Folders will get two little dots in the upper left corner then
08.04.09 Added: Call SipGetInfo/SipSetInfo when Aygshell.dll not available to control the input panel
30.12.08 Added: Secure ftp over ssl via external cecmdssl.dll
22.12.08 Added: Cursor keys select files when Ctl button in button bar is pressed
22.12.08 Added: Added: use '.' key on devices with keyboard (e.g. Palm Treo) to swap panels, since they have no Tab key
22.12.08 Added: Support for hardware left/right menu buttons also in text editor (WM5/6)
10.11.08 Added: Disable options "Send via bluetooth" and "Send via IRDA" in main menu when nothing selected, or when in plugin or archive
06.10.08 Added: "Send via Bluetooth" now also supports Broadcom/Widcomm stack on Windows Mobile 2003 or newer

That is just fascinating. Why would one architecture have this bug and another not??

I was able to locate two additional versions of Total Commander. 2.52 Beta 1 and Beta 2.

https://www.hpcfactor.com/scl/2152/Christian_Ghisler/Total_Commander/version_2.52_Beta_1
https://www.hpcfactor.com/scl/2151/Christian_Ghisler/Total_Commander/version_2.52_Beta_2

Thus, I was able to test them both.

Beta 2 exhibits the same bug as Beta 3. BUT.
Beta 1 works perfect and instantly (no 5-6 minute uptime required)! (Obviously it probably has other bugs that were subsequently fixed in Betas 2 and 3), but this is great because at least it's newer code than 2.51.

So now we know Beta 2 is where the uptime bug started
