Hello everyone, I have a question to ask about Information about Lan to RS232 adapters.
I noticed the existence of these devices and was wondering if it is possible to use them with my IBM 330 with Windows 95 to have the PC with Internet access.

Alternatively, I know there is a COM port for infrared in my IBM. I was wondering if it is possible to use that to connect the PC to a LAN.

it's just a curiosity.

Can you post an eBay link to one as an example?

A serial to ethernet adapter would have to be a PPP bridge of some sort. IR is just a serial connection, so would need the same thing with an IR port.

What happened to your ethernet card?

I don't have an ethernet card, also because I don't have any free PCI slots. I only have a USB Wi-Fi device that is only compatible with Windows 2000. If you remember, I made the video of me surfing the internet.
Mine was a simple curiosity about Windows 95.
These are some examples:

If I'm not mistaken, those cables that do serial to Ethernet provides access to routers / switches such as from Cisco.

But in this thread, someone is saying he was able to connect to terminal server using RJ45 -> serial port

https://groups.google.com/g/comp.os.ms-windows.networking.tcp-ip/c/5uY4Y_6XPmw

So I guess the cable can be used for what you want to do.

This medium post may be related.

I also have a Chinese Ethernet to Serial converter which I bought for use with Sigmarion 1, but I haven't had the time to properly use it yet. It is mostly used as IoT device's connection to Ethernet and WAN.

Ah, well, that was a long time ago now and I don't remember

Yes, the first three aren't serial to Ethernet adapters, they are Cisco Rollover cables. It's a proprietary serial cable that goes from DB9 to an 8p8c connector. It has nothing to do with Ethernet what so ever.

The last one is more the type of thing that you would expect, it's a computer chip in its own right, runs an operating system, provides DUN, bridging, NAT/routing internally. How good the documentation is for it, given that the description is all over the place... is anyone's guess. That is more like what you would need though.

Remind us what you have on the PCI/ISA bus card wise?

Sorry for the delay, lots of work, lots of problems!
So, if I understand correctly I need to see the PCI/ISA card? BUT where is it located? Do I have to open the PC?

I have an idea - it doesn't exactly answer your question:

@C:Amie - could NarakuITA use a PCI to PCMCIA adapter and just swap out PCMCIA cards for things such as Ethernet cards?

@NarakuITA - what are the PCI slots you're using for?

Yes, as said, can you let us know what cards are in the system, perhaps a photo of the motherboard? The card slots are on the motherboard.

I had already considered PCMCIA as an option - I've had the eBay link ready for a couple of weeks - but without an empty slot, it's a no go. So we need to see what is in it. They are also quite rare, thus probably more expensive.

Ok, I'll take a look at it when I have time. I also see among the old photos I had taken in the past if there is something useful.

Today you can get everything to wifi. There are cheap circuits for the C64 expansion port to get it online.

Or look at those:
https://www.simulant.uk/shop/retro-vintage-computer-wifi-modem-rs232-serial-hayes-compatible?search=serial

The problem with all those ist that you have to write your own software to use it.

Of course there is already some kind of browser for the C64 because it is a common device and there are some retro-proxies (raspberry) to cut down the html-stuff

Have fun
Stefan

If you mean the slot under the PCI sound card there is currently the USB 2.0 card
Remember, these are old and not current photos with all the updates he made me do to the PC.

In the first photo, which shows the back of the PC, you can see the serial port, to the left of the keyboard connection. That is the connection for the infrared port.

What are you using the USB card for?

According to https://web.archive.org/web/20000302074734/http://belkin.com/products/product_index/USB/usb_catalog_pages/ethernet_adapter/F5U011.html

The Belkin is compatible with Windows 95 OEM SR 2.1 or higher.

Driver is: https://web.archive.org/web/20010606124328/http://www.belkin.com/support/tech/USBdownload.html

This page has a Windows 95 driver for the :
https://web.archive.org/web/20020204105741/http://www.belkin.com/support/tech/USBdownload2.html

The F5U122-PC and the F5D5050 appear to be Windows 98 and higher only on the Belkin site. So neither of those are of any use.

So if you can find a or a you can Ethernet over USB. Otherwise you will have to lose the USB card, the sound card or move back to Windows 98 and get a 98 compatible USB dongle (for which there are plenty). Good luck finding either of those though!
