Been looking for a lightweight, ssl-capable browser for my ancient Sony Vaio that's still running Lubuntu 10.04. Chromium or Links2 for Lucid doesn't have current security and can't be updated without dependency hell.
In Pale Moon's archive section, I downloaded its earliest iteration, extracted it into a directory, and since it's portable, away it went. It'll run on an sd card.
Obviously, with aging cpus, I blocked images and anything else to make the url as light as possible, but I am surprised at its relative speed and ability to reach most sites. It even imports other browsers' bookmarks, etc if you desire. One can practically emulate links2's speed and minimal approach by enabling View/Page Style/No Style
It has a overly-heightened sense of security, sending up alarms about sites as mild as washingtonpost.post, forcing you to make said site an exception. Furthermore, certain sites
(eg: hpcfactor.com
) don't properly display, weirdly showing the hpcfactor home page's text in its entirety, but only using 2/3s of the screen to do so. I haven't yet figured out why.
Too bad developers never considered a Windows CE version. Or even DOS...
