| Hi, sorry for the delay. No it didn't work. I can tell you that the clamscan.exe process takes up all the system resources. I have no idea why it always starts.
I think I'll uninstall it... |

| Here are photos of the CD-ROM drive. I would like, as already mentioned, to get a DVD-ROM player
Unfortunately I am not able to open the laptop completely, and I cannot find out what CPU it has. I would have liked to change, if that too was possible, but I can't. This PC at least for me is not easy to open.
According to the manual, it has an SD-C2402 model.
Currently there is a CD-ROM drive model CD-224E
Can you help me get the correct DVD-ROM to replace this CD-ROM? Edited by NarakuITA 2024-03-11 10:47 AM

| What is the long model number of the laptop? There should be a sticker on the bottom of the case with that number.
If you are sure the sd-c2402 is the correct DVD part, there are two for sale on the uk ebay (Greece and Germany).
I think these DVD players were region locked. Not sure how that works in Europe or if that is resettable a few times like on modern DVD drives.
I vaguely recall people swapping out a variety of drives from that port but they had to take a fitting or two off the OEM drive (or repackage it?). Might have been a different Toshiba laptop model, however.

The DVD-ROM player that you linked to me on ebay, I notice that the "connections where you screw in the screws" are different from mine.
Here's what's behind the laptop:

| The laptop's tag gives us an idea of the CPU "C750":
750MHz, Mobile Intel® Celeron™ processor, 100 MHz Front Side Bus, 128 KB 2nd level cache
______
Oh there are some SD-C2402 Toshiba DVD modules on ebay (there are similar part numbers for different brand laptops ). Anyways you may need to swap some mounting hardware from your current CD drive. Beware of US-Euro region locks.
This gives some idea of optical drive options for similar Satellite laptops. I thought the swapable drives were cross compatible among same year laptops but don't 100% remember. Toshiba also had an external case which could house the 3.5" floppy disc drive (and maybe a CD or DVD drive ) which had some proprietary connector to the laptop IIRC.

These guys list several optical drives available. I can't figure out the OEM part numbers. You can ask them for fitment (the DVD players might be region locked to either the US or Europe so you need to ask ).

There was a lot of innovation at this time so I suspect you can't use equipment that is much newer (at least without some config work ). Edited by AximUser 2024-03-11 11:43 PM

| The last one you shared on ebay, I don't think it's compatible, the back is completely different.
Maybe by changing the connection, where the screws go, the first DVD player you sent me on ebay is better.
I looked at the site, I guess it's American? Because even if the product is in stock, it is probably blocked at a regional level. I honestly don't feel like trying to unlock it. Anyway, I'll send him an email. I think it's difficult to change readers...
I made this image. I don't know if it's possible to replace, I don't know what to call it, that screw-in thing on the DVD-ROM.

| On your last photos above, the back sides look the same as far as I can tell. The clues would be a 50-pin ATAPI connector and 4 drilled holes for brackets.
I think:
- the bracket on the back of your CD drive (with 2 screws ) needs to be removed,
- the bracket on the back of the SD-C2402 needs to be removed,
- the CD bracket needs to be installed on the SD-C2402
This is what the SD-C2402 looks like without the bracket:
https://web.archive.org/web/20001211201900/http://www.toshiba.com/taecdpd/techdocs/sd2402/2402connect.shtml
This is the Toshiba archive of the SD-C2402 user and technical information. Near the top you can select a different model. For this model, you can select: tech docs, specs, driver info, jumper settings
https://web.archive.org/web/20010210200539/http://www.toshiba.com/taecdpd/products/features/SDC2402-Over.shtml
That archive states drivers are not necessary for "Windows '95/'98/2000/NT."
https://web.archive.org/web/20010126135900/http://toshiba.com/taecdpd/support/drivers.shtml
I don't know much about DVD region settings. There are different "codes" for Europe and the US, for example. Some newer DVD drives could change regions say 5 times and then locked to the last used. I don't know how that was done c.2000. |

| Toshiba (now it is Sharp, aka dynabook ) still provides support on this with some interesting info on the US model (detailed specs, drivers, knowledge base ). Satellite Pro 4600

Toshiba's options brochures show optical drive models & compatibility. Here are the 1998, 1999, 2000 versions; I don't know if there is one for 2001 (which I think you would need or some sales manual )

| So, I'm going to try buying that DVD-ROM drive and replacing the bracket.
You gave me a lot of information, maybe even too much
With some I didn't understand very well. I had already downloaded the drivers. But I also have the original CD, like the manuals.
In any case, now I'll give it a try, buy that DVD-ROM and see if replacing the brackets solves the problem! Let's hope so! |

| The DVD-ROM has arrived, but unfortunately it doesn't fit completely into the laptop.
The various sides are the same as my CD-ROM, however the front bezel is slightly longer, this prevents it from being inserted into the laptop.
Is there a way to remove it and replace it?

| Don't those plastic covers come off? BE CAREFUL, I don't know how though without breaking it
Obviously if you take the cover off, it'll be ugly and button will be super tiny and I'm not sure if the "faceplate" of the other one would fit
here's a video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=XXhpu3JUkNU
BUT again be careful that's not specific to your model, I don't want you to risk damaging it.
also the video is SATA, not the kind you have... Edited by torch 2024-03-22 10:01 PM

I could do better, perhaps with a small roller, I could saw, slightly bevel the plastic so that it fits into the laptop.
What do you think?
The reader is recognized. I opened the DVD-ROM with a pin, so I could insert it correctly into the PC.
I started the computer, and Windows 2000 could easily see it in My System.
So it works and is compatible. Obviously, since I couldn't close the door, I couldn't try to test the unit by reading a DVD. But on eBay the retailer said it worked, it had been tested. Edited by NarakuITA 2024-03-23 2:45 PM

| As soon as I can, I try to cut and remove some plastic and fit the DVD-ROM reader correctly into the slot in the laptop. |

| I had a 4600 series Toshiba and my plastic part came off the drive and it still worked 100%. Was a little louder when loading the CDs but it worked no issues. ;-) Hope this helps |
