Pc sound problem

Hey everyone. well I'm having probs with my pc, running windows 2000. The sound isn't working, and what is more curious is that though the main problem is with sound, any music or video that I try to play, though there is no sound, it plays at like x2 or x3 the speed of normality. I don't understand.
I was uninstalling programs from the pc a few days ago and it may have been that I uninstalled something by mistake. but I have tried the device manager, clickig on the sound device and uninstalling it and trying to update drivers and stuff etc... no joy from anything. I have onboard sound as far as I know.

Anyone ever had similar experiences?
