hello.
i just purchased a clio on ebay.
i was wondering what wifi card would work for it.
before you start rolling your eyes , yes i went throught the hcl.
problem is, i read somewhere that only the ORiNOCO works.
what other cards work in the 1050?
to add to my confusion, there are TWO ORiNOCO cards, on the hcl list.
ORiNOCO Gold / Silver (802.11b) & 802.11 PC Card Gold (8410-WD)
and only the first one is said to be compatible with ce2.1.
could someone clarify this for me????

i think i'll be back often to pick you guys' brain

Any H/PC Pro 'ok' card will work in the Clio

The Clio runs H/PC Pro. Just like a Dell Dimension running Windows XP. Any hardware that runs under XP will work on a Dell Dimension and an IBM Thinkpad. The same logic is true of the H/PC.

The problem with Orinoco card is that there are 32-bit and 16-bit versions. You MUST have a 16-bit version.
The difference between Gold/Silver is WEP standards support apparently.

This is something that is hampering my search, working out which ones on ebay are 16 bit. So far I havent got one for this reason. I was searching for an Orinoco silver myself, but they all seem to be new, which I assume is going to be 32bit.

I can understand the confusion, Im suffering it too, and if I get the wrong one my wife will go nuts at me.

Don't forget that if the seller has provided a genuine device photo (har har har) then you can spot the difference as 32-bit have a gold band around the pin recess.

32-bit on the left.

If there's too much confusion with orinico get a Netgear MA401. It's 16 bit for sure with a wide range of driver support. The Linksys WPC11 v2.5 is a winner also. Some say the v3 is OK but my experience tells me v2.5 is 100% workable. Both support 128 bit wep.

I've never quite figured out the Orinico strategy of making silver/gold cards with different levels of WEP and different costs.

The Belkin F5D6020 is another good cheapie but it has 3 versions I know of. Only V1 (single led) is prism based. A great CF card is the dlink dcf-660. Prism based, low power and happy with a variety of drivers from ce211 on up.

Go with the first one, not the 8410WD. I have a Clio 1050 and an ORiNOCO Gold card by Agere Systems, and the card works fine on the Clio with the Agere client. (Check the name of the manufacturer - I recommend the ones made by Lucent or Agere, not the newer ones made by Avaya or Proxim.)
