I have seen a few threads that say:

"Thread Closed
Please do not trawl old threads."

What does this mean?

They're people who come along and post questions to a thread that is long since dead. Often they're questions to the original poster, and a lot of the time the poster is a one off guest.

They don't address the current board population, and it's difficult for other members to keep track of threads that have been out of out consciousness for any length of time. It's policy to close such threads if there is a gap of longer than three months.

Exceptions would be where it is 100% relevant, with no where else on the board to post, the original thread starter requested information or it's a sticky.

All the ones that I have closed down recently have been an unregistered user hijacking a long dead thread with something that can only be described as 'loosely related' - if at all.

It all falls under established Newsgroup / Forum etiquette.
