Like I said, installing dropline gnome will install and configure HAL correctly, so it will magically start working.
There are more ways to get Linux on a computer than cdrom...
I would suggest network or something. Slackware install allows installing off a networked pc, and many other distributions
(including Debian, and I believe Gentoo
) allow you to download as you install. Be creative, you can get it to work.
