The speed that dvd-rom drives read is close to many hard drives. Burning is similar. Simply, I highly doubt it is possible to write a file larger than half a meg to a dvd before failing.
CD-burners may have hope, though - I have wondered about this multiple times. But since the usb cf card for the 720 costs more than a new microdrive

), I never got to test this. My guess is that 2x speed for burning is definitely possible, and 4x is about what it can really do

). Of course, this would only really be plausible if you had a microdrive, as that is the only media that anyone would have that has more storage space than a cd, and thus, a system backup could be made. No reason really, otherwise
(except for those nifty little 250mb cdrw's, but I still prefer zip...
)
