It works on the 720, so there is a chance of it working on the 680.

Definitely worth a try, especially if you can borrow a microdrive.

My short answer: most likely.

I have a Jornada 680 (e). Its running Linux from compact flash. I've heard that compact flash cards tend to break if used too much. Then I heard of Microdrives, which apparantly do not suffer this problem.

The new problem is that microdrives all seemt to be typeII. The Jornada only has a CF I slot. My question: is the only difference between types I and II the size of the card? If it is, would taking the back off the little popup slot thing allow me to use one?

I think what you're trying to do will be a bit harder than the j720 mod. the reason is that in the j720, the cf slot, when in normal position, accepts the cards "upside down". i mean, if you get a card, the brand & capacity sticker (anverse) will be looking to the bottom, whereas the writable & copyright info sticker (reverse) will be facing upside.

the type II CF cards are wider than the type I at expense of the anverse side, that means that the protuding part in the j720 is the lower part of the card, whereas, the CF slot in the 680 gets the card in exactly the opposite direction. i don't know it it was well explained, so i'll post a drawing to illustrate it

Thanks... Nice explanation...

I dont like the sound of cutting my Jornada up. I thought that if could just remove the back plate (the bit that has the diagram of how you put cards in) by unscrewing the screws on the top and the sides...

Oh well, thanks anyway...

I knew the 680 had a weird cf slot, but never owned one...

I'm really pleased to learn my 720 will take type II cards with a simple mod. As per my other post about storage, if/when huge cheap microdrives appear I can freely choose between them and huge CF cards.

It looks like my 6651/MPs will take a type II in the CF slot. Great news. No worry about form factor there.

I can't wait for huge microdrives. Imagine 20-30gb on inside a hpc.

What exactly would you do with a 20GB Microdrive??

Personally, I'd rather a 7200RPM microdrive of the current size, for my laptop where weight is an issue as wel as performance and battery draw. I'd imagine a 7200RPM micrdrive cant eat more than 400mAh when tuned :-)

First, you have to imagine programs large enough to require a 20-30gb drive in a hpc.

Unreal Tournament CE?

Hahah, it would have cheap overhead graphics that the 512k vram could take, and only certain colors, because the dstn can only display a few well.

Lol, imagine that

start the game, wait like 25 secs for it to load, then sudden blurness, then you're dead. After 10 loops or so, the intermec/sigmarion users will be laughing about you all over the floor :coward:
