I have been trying to play WMV files on the S3 or J720 but to no avail. It seems the WMP in S3 or Betaplayer needs some sort of codecs. Otherwise I have to keep converting WMV to MPEG files in order to play it on S3.

Anyone can point me to the right direction? Thanks!

The HPC versions of Windows Media Player can't play Windows Media 9 series video. I usually use Xvid with videos for my PHH. TCPMP handles those with no troubles.

Hmmm...does it mean that there isnt any third party solution to overcome this WMV obstacle?? Bummer.

I am using TCPMP right now but for MPEG. Which Xvid player are you using?

According to the TCPMP site, TCPMP supports XviD video codecs...

XviD is not listed as one of the file types in the menu "File/Open File/Filter." Neither is WMV. But maybe one or both will work if you select "All files (*.*)." This is not the default setting, however. Have you checked this?

if a file uses teh xvid codecs it doesnt mean it will have .xvid as the file extension.

Right, but it's not listed as a category either. DivX is, but not XviD.

Oh well, I also thought it would be nice to convert a movie as a WMV file in order to save storage space! It usually takes about 1GB of storage to save a movie in MPEG format....

I'm not too familiar with Xvid. How big is a .Xvid file if one were to convert a movie?

Check out DVD Catalyst (see the home page of this site). I have a slightly older version called Pocket DVD, and I recorded a two-hour movie in AVI format using about 270 MB. (It records in WMV for Pocket PC, but TCPMP won't play audio in this format - I forgot about this - so I used the Palm OS settings. The movie plays pretty well on both my MP790 and my PalmOne Zire 31 [using TCPMP for Palm OS] - sound quality is near-CD quality, and video streaming is decent though not perfect.)
