My 720 ebay buy arrived today. I never held one till this afternoon. I'm using to type this post. I like the size, but the keyboard sure isn't as nice as the mobile pro.

The unit is in very good condition, especially the screen. It came with a cradle and, what appear to be, brand new cables and a.c. adapter.

I won an 820 the next day on ebay as well, both units for under $290.00 total. I didn't even think about winning the 820, the final was only $92.00.

After only having the nec units, I need to search for compatible software.

COOL. I still want a 820. Give a full assessment once you compare the 720/820 with the MobilePro. You have a MP790 correct?

Actually I have a 780 with the 790 rom installed.

So far, I hate the way the caps lock works
The fastest hpc or ppc I have ever set up active sync or wifi on, PERIOD!
I was running wifi within 3-4 minutes of sitting down at my desk with the
unit.
vxftp was just as easy to set up.
Wodeon 3 minutes, works great too.
My SANDISK and LEXAR 1 gig cf cards fit the slot as well.
The 720 is one of a corporate "sell off" I believe.
I figured that for $186.90 (shipping included) this was the best way to get my first 720.

I assume you were talking about the 780/790 that others call a 789 in the first section. I am interested in compare and contrast in both. Though with a 789 it won't be absolutely complete. I just want a honest comparison between the 790 and the 720. Speed VS size of keyboard

The only real difference between the 780-790 is the flash memory module. Everything else is the same.

The mobile pro is bigger than the 720 docking cradle, so portability is better with the720.

I like the 720 apps very much the calc, the hp viewer is great for quick access to often used settings.

The Nec has a better screen, although both are dstn, the 720's digitizer has a "grainey" look to it.

The 720 works on the web noticeably faster than the Nec. Using the same wifi card.

Movies that I processed for the 780 play just as well on the 720, using WODEON.
Streaming mpeg video from he web worked faster with the 720.
BTW, Wodeon streams video great for my hpcs.

I have a 6 month old AXIM 30 pda that was already taking backseat to the mobilepro. The 720 will pro'lly be the end of the Dell. The hpc's keyboards make all the difference to me.

I can already envision the mobilepro on my desk all day, my 720 in my back pocket as I move around and just sync them via irda as needed.

That $92 is a particularly good price for the 820.

i would like to help with a speed comparison but unfortunately i have only a 780... the hardware is obviously the same as 790, but i dont know how big a difference the OS is making in speed. i had a chance to compare my 780 to the 790, but forgot to take advantage of that opportunity
anyway the 720 is much faster in about everything than the 780... period.

keyboard? oh well i have always been happy with the J keyboard but after getting my first mobilepro (the 900) i cant always get used to the J keyboard easily after using a MP even though the J keyboard never was a real compromise for me, with the MP's i dont even notice i'm not typing on a PC....

I believe you forgot to mention that the 790 also uses the upgraded HPC 2000 OS (instead of the HPC Pro OS) which has a newer and better version of Internet Explorer. The built-in Office componants are pretty much the unchanged.

Better browser, AMEN! I just got that fact shoved in my face, I FORGOT THAT THE 820 WAS HPC/PRO!

I got home with my new toy and couldn't even access these forums!
I got a major deal, the 820 is pristine. The mouse pad and keys don't even look used, the screen is flawless and the case doe not have a single scratch. The only problem was a low backup battery warning. The good deal? There was a 16bit lan card included in the package.

Of course, there is always a kicker, my laptop took a dump and I just had to reload the os, lost everything!

Oh well, all the hpc/pro goodies stored on it were for a MIPS based system anyway.

Overall, I think the 720/820 feel +/- 20% faster than the 780/790. The web performance is much faster, lan or wifi. The use of a mouse with the 820 is great!

I've only poked the screen 3 or 4 times, so far!

Question, how do you folks with large collections keep the batteries conditioned?

I've got
