Has anyone actually been able to connect an airpanel 100 to a PC through the USB port? I assumed that this would be done with ActiveSync running on the XP machine however I have attached one to the other with a usb A to usb A cord and xp is not seeing any connectivity nor is active sync able to connect.

I don't think that you will be able to get a straight usb A to usb A to work.

My Neta 980 uses a special usb cable that attaches to the connector in the BACK of the unit - OR - Alternatively, you can hook up through the standard usb port on the back of the docking station.

To use activesync, I think you will have to connect through the USB (as described above) or through the IR port (if the Airpanel's IR port actually works - It does NOT work on the NETA).

The IR port appears to be disabled on the Airpanel as well. (Really weird that they put the port there and then don't use it. ) Maybe that cable you have would fit the Airpanel as well since they seem to be different brands of the same device. (The only other option for setting up an ActiveSync partnership seems to be the optional cradle, which I've been looking for without success thus far.)

Say cmonex, I have 3 Viewpad 100s all of which have successfully undergone the firmware upgrade from 3.0 to cenet 4.1. I have not porblem using one as a guinea pig and doing a little 'cooking' with it to see if we can't exploit these units beyond their basic functionality. Sure seems to me we ought to be able to 'add' the missing files that otherwise limit this from being a full blown pda given there are other cenet 4.1 devices that are.

On a different note... still trying to load cisco drivers/utilities for aironet 350 wireless card to the AP100 version 2.3.... given I have no PC sync capability... and have had no luck with a 'back to back' usb cable (this is of a special design which is suppose to allow for data transfer between USB host to USB host but does not have ce drivers), I have extracted the cab files (there are 3) which are for the cisco ce .net 4.1 however I can find no executable file within. It was suggested here earlier that if I could move them to CF I could load them directly on the AP100. Without an obvious executable... can anyone assist in helping me to understand which file would initiate the install?

My guess is there is another transalation that goes on in file names during the cisco extraction over just unarchiving the cab files which is why I don't know the 'real' extensions that should go on these files. Again... remember that the cisco install utility checks to see if there is a valid CE device connected before it will extract the files.

Any help here is much appreciated. Also... if someone can give me a name and model number of an actual network card wifi or Ethernet card that works right out of the box (no drivers needing to be loaded) I would appreciate that as well.

Try opening the first embedded file in each of the three lists above on the PC using Notepad. That's probably the file that identifies the actual names of each of the other embedded files. Then you can rename each of the other files accordingly, and then copy them onto the Airpanel. (I've done this successfully with lots of CAB files.)

Any Agere-based card should work out of the box, since the Agere driver is in the Airpanel CE 4.1 .net ROM.

The TCPMP issue is due to lack of a good version of gx.dll for the 24-bit color setting. Change the registry value for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Drivers/Display/MQ200/BPP from 24 to 16 and soft reset to change to 16-bit color, and it should be fine. As for WLAN, I haven't had any problem with the preinstalled drivers.

Nate, are you saying you prefer Calligrapher over Transcriber (the latter included in the CE 4.1 .net ROM)?

Thanks for the tip about TCPMP.

As for Transcriber, I hadn't tried all the features. I hadn't heard of it until I'd read your post. After doing some Googling, I have to say it looks pretty good. I even found a download link:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/details.aspx?FamilyID=a8b343c3-2eee-41e3-9339-f7b303f4b386&displaylang=en

I'm going to see what devices it works on.

Calligrapher might indeed be better than Transcriber. It's based at least partially on Transcriber. It's certainly better than the link I found.

Calligrapher was developed by a company called Phatware. They stopped supporting HPCs with Calligrapher v6.6. The Airpanel 100 has v6.0, so upgrading might be free.

Say CE Geek,

You are correct regarding the first file having the names of the remaining files. Would you assume that the first file name (shown in the list above under each cab listing) would end with an .inf extension? I can not identify the name that his file actually is but I am guessing it is "ciscowireless.inf".

Ok... I believe the name of the 1st file should actually be that of the cab file.. which is ciscowince2002a but I still do not know what the extension of the file should be. I assume this is the configuration file for the install which in a windows world would be .inf... not sure what it should be for cenet.

I am assuming that the ACU.exe file is the initial install executable... only because none of the other exe's make sense. What I am getting when I initiate it is "Cannot find 'ACU' (or one of it's components). Make sure the path and filename are correct and that all the required libraries are available."

That may be the Pocket PC version of mfcce300.dll, in which case you still need aygshell.dll and doclist.dll. Check the file size of mfcce300.dll - is it 397k (H/PC 2000) or 404k (Pocket PC)?

The initial file (where I extracted the names of the other files from) is 4,305 bytes in size.

The mfcce300.dll file is part of the file list and it's size is 404k.

Here are the exe's associated with the cab "ciscowince2002a.cab"

Name Size
ACU.exe 108,544
Authmgr.exe 45,056
Certmgr.exe 22,016
Enroll.exe 20,992
Wireless login module.exe 25,600

If none of these are the initial 'install' file... then I have no idea what file should be initiated to start the install from the AP100.

I picked the ACU.exe file as it has a cisco wifi logo associated with the file name.

Okay, that's the Pocket PC one, so you do need aygshell.dll and doclist.dll. (You can download them from cmonex' site if you don't have them.)

(I think you've chosen the correct executable, BTW.)

Ummmmmmmmmm... I hate to show my ignorance here... tho I probably have over and over again... I heard mention of cmonex' site however.. I have no idea where this site is... can you provide a url?

I assume these two files can be placed on the CF card with the cisco files and the cisco install will see them?

Look for links for "arm dlls" and "aygshells." The downloaded files are ZIP files with multiple folders inside. There'll be more than one version of aygshell.dll and doclist.dll in these ZIP files; it's likely that more than one (and perhaps all) the versions of doclist.dll will work, and the versions of aygshell.dll in folders 4, 5, and 15 of the aygshell ZIP package are all very good aygshells that should work with most programs, so try those first to see if the Aironet utility opens with one of them. (And yes, you can place them in the same folder with the Aironet utility program; however, they'll probably all have to be placed in \Windows rather than anywhere else to work properly. In any event, you'll have to copy them there manually since you're bypassing the installer with this method.)

Ok... have gotten a bit further... ACU.exe starts and now provides a different msg.

"Warning: this version of ACU requires driver 2.30.xx or higher to work properly. Current driver version is 0.00.00"

Now the Cisco site indicated these cab files were the drivers AND the client utility... so... I am confused again.

Okay, let's take a step back. Looking at your previous posts, it's not clear to me whether you tried copying each of the CAB files in one piece onto a CF card and then tried to execute the CAB file(s) themselves on the Airpanel (ie, looking for the CAB file on the Airpanel and double-tapping on it to open it there). Have you tried this?

I did try that prior to loading the two files you suggested. I will try that again. Stand by.
