| What exactly is war-driving? How would I get such programs on my handhelds? |

| It is driving with a WiFi equipped car in search or Wireless access points - preferably unencrypted. You can then submit the details to online databases or warchalk it.
Black-hats use it to break networks and have a quick getaway.
To do it you need a LAN scanner utility like ministumbler and for performance a directional / omnidirection high gain tranceiver |

war driving refers to driving around with a wifi-sensor/detector such as a notebook, pda or those keychain gadget and tracking down available wifi networks.
I would almost like to include a wikipedia link, but on hindsight, I'm beginning to distrust the info there, as there is somehow some fella (possibly with bots running ) who think their definition of certain matters is ZE fact. |

| Thanks for the info on War-driving.
I downloaded mini-stumbler. Is there anything else you need aside from that? |

| My wardriving essentials:
Inverter to power my gear.
Ministumbler (better than Pocketwarrior IMO )
Wifi card (naturally, the more sensitive the better, I prefer my Dlink DCF-660 )
Nice, but optional, a CF GPS unit to capture the AP data for later use.
In a high density area with many buildings I have little use for a high gain antenna. I find more than enough open APs with just my wifi card.
I'll bet next week I'll find another 25-50% more open APs than exist now. So many n00bs will get wifi gear for Christmas and have no clue about security
You can warwalk (especially in buildings, business or other ) with a suitable PPC. My Casio E200 fills the bill perfectly. I guess for that reason I'll hang onto it for a while longer. |

I want to get a chance at wep-cracking on my 720 sometime, now if it was faster than a 206mhz strongarm, it might be useful!
Airsnort, I believe.

You could do that just as easily with your 720s, but you'd probably get attention.
Me, I've just done war-scavanging thus far (checking places where I stop for networks ). Wardriving is a little dangerous in Southern California traffic (especially close to where I live ), but I expect to be doing some warwalking in LA from time to time. |

| Yes, a ppc is much easier to hide in shorts and summer shirt than any hpc, even a 720.
I'm amazed at the number of government buildings that prohibit cameras, laptops and whatnot but never say boo about my casio. Once or twice I've said it's a phone and played a wave of ringing to prove the point then security lets me pass. |

| Clever! Yeah, I don't think I'd try hiding a 720 in my shorts. |

Maybe in a bar as a conversation piece |

| I can already hear a new version of the old Mae West line: "Is that a Jornada in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"
