In February my subscription to the Norton Anti-Virus definitions for my desktop computer is over. I am sick of Norton. It is resource heavy, scanning everything I open, and if you dare to download and try another anti-virus program, such as Avast, it gets all out of kink. But with the Avast I found a trojan in my boot system, that the Norton never identified. Chiefly, I am sick of Norton.

Avast free home edition is nice. I have it on my laptops. But it does not catch all the trojans from downloaded programs either. And Avast is free - but how many computers can you put it on?

I'm thinking of Trend Micro. Everything I have read about it has been good. But I am a little leery of the high price, about $50. I know I can get it cheaper on Ebay - around $20 to $25 for Internet Security 2005. But I'm afraid because they don't sell it with the box and I'm wondering if the code they provide will work to activate the software and the definitions.

What are your recommendations for a good program? And is it safe to buy on Ebay these kinds of programs?

I use NAV 2005, however, I can give you some names of programs to look up.. I believe McAfee is pretty good.. Also, I recommend that you get an Ad-Ware scanner seperate as well...

TenJeanGosi,

I have Ad-aware - it is good

What are the other programs for anti-virus you recommend? And do you think it is a good idea to give up the Norton?

If Symantec had a slogan, it would read: "Got Norton? Got Infected!"

Useless program suite IMPO

McAfee or Kapersky plus ad-aware and MS Anti-Spyware beta or Spybot.

Yes, I have ad-aware too, great program... Well, NAV 2005 is a bit expensive at 50 USD to renew every year... It is your choice if you want to pay that much...

I had Norton, got infected, switched back to Avast. I used Avast for years with no infections. I got Norton for free, and had to dump everything. I recommend Avast.

This morning I took the Norton anti-virus program off my laptop and installed a fresh version of Avast. During the installation process, Avast found a few trojans, that the Norton never detected.

Now I am running a trial of Trojan Hunter and it is finding even more trojans, especially disturbing - in the registry system.

The Avast is good and better than Norton. And best of all - FREE! But you still need to run other programs to get everything you can off your system.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice.

For anyone who wants it here is a link. http://www.avast.com/eng/programs.html
I also use the Virus cleaner, and there are some really cool skins too.

AVG free 7, Spybot and Sygate Personal firewall.

I dumped Norton ages ago, it was a relentless hog. I dropped Kerio PF as it suddenly started blue-screening with my wifi drivers. Spybot, it works well for me, nuff said.
