When I first fired up my jornada 720, it was making appropriate noises (screen and keyboard clicks, etc). Then it stopped making any noises at all. I replaced the backup battery, which is known to sometimes cause the sound to turn off among other problems, but to no avail. Anyone have a clue as to what is going on and how to fix it?

This is a defect found in most HP 720's and 728's.

I've tried everything to correct the problem, but inevitablity it always reverts back to mute.

You are not alone! Hate to say it, but it's something you'll learn to live with!

What the Story one says is alas a common problem >_<

There are two syndromes

1) The headphone jack is damed - it's pretty easy on these
2) Go into Sounds & Volume and Control Panel and drag the volume all the way up then right back down again, thet usually fixes it for the session.. however eventually it will mute again. I'm fairly confident that it releates to the deamon that monitors for the audio button keyboard shortcut.

Just to add to John & Chris' comments - there is also a physical issue with the solder point on the board where the headphone jack and PCMCIA chassis meet... the card inserting/ejecting rubs on this point until it breaks....

Again, a documented issue....
