| I have the NEC MobilePro 790 with HPC 2000 mips and a Hitachi Eplate with HPC Pro sh4.
I've looked at the freeware Microsoft Pocket Streets 2001, but they never came out with maps for my city in upstate in NY. Neither does the latest version 2005 (which I do know will not work on 2001).
So if you are interested with getting a program and a couple of maps of upstate NY cities - what's your best option for these older handhelds? |

You need to get a copy of MS Streets and Trips 2001 or 2002, this is what's used to create the Pocket Streets maps. Check eBay where you can buy a copy for a cheap price of about $10 USD.
Then you can just extract a map of your city in upstate New York or any other city in North America when ever you want! |

| Do you use these maps with the Pocket Streets 2001 program?
And, Hurricane John, how do you create these maps? Can you do this with any maps? Like a MapQuest or Yahoo map. Or a map from Rand McNally Road Atlas? |

| Find a cheap copy of Streets 2005. The ppc program works fine on hpcs with the ppc stub dlls and has gps support and all other functions work too. PS2001 is obsolete for hpc2k, it's had its day.
You can extract hpc compatible maps for US/Canada from your desktop. The maps aren't the newest but again most programs I tried have maps a few years old. |

OK - since you have decided to totally dismiss Pocket Streets 2001 or 2002 (which are compatiable with HPC's ) and you are going to point him/her in the direction of using Pocket Streets 2005 (which does not provide a version of Pocket Streets which is compatiable with HPC's ) ......then at least explain how this is done and where he/she can obtains the ppc stub dlls.
Don't just leave them hanging and assume that they understand what you are talking about and that they know how to go about doing what you are suggesting they do? |

Do you use these maps with the Pocket Streets 2001 program?
Yes - Think of MS Streets and Trips 2001 as the full desktop version and Pocket Streets 2001 as the scaled down mobile version.

No - Pocket Streets 2001 can only read maps which are extracted from MS Streets and Trips 2001 and not any of those other products you mentioned.
I know that Pocket Streets 2002 (the last version compatiable with HPC's ) allows you to view maps extracted from MS Streets & Trips 2004 (but not 2005 ). I'm not sure if Pocket Streets 2001 allows you to do that, but you could easily try it by downloading one of the free 2004 maps available at MS Streets & Trips website. |

| There's no need to rehash a well covered topic if someone doesn't want to use the search function.

And I'll say it only once again. Once you have Streets 2005 installed on your desktop you can export a hpc compatible map for anywhere in the US or Canada. |

Wally - where do you get the ppc stub dlls? And where do you get the maps?
they will not work on your SH4 hitachi
the hack is hpc2000 only, so only your 790 can have PS 2005 |

| I did mention ps2001 was obsolete for hpc2k, but I should have elaborated that ps2005 is only hpc2k suitable.
So several questions.
Do you need gps support? Ps2005.
Do you need both your hpcs to have maps? Ps2001/2002
Do you want all the pstreets features to work (contact linking, etc.) Ps2005
Do you want the most recent maps? PS2005 (tho as I said, they may not be any newer) |

| And let's not forget my favorite...Street Wizard Professional. Pricey, but super nice, and it runs on ARM, MIPS, SH3, and SH4 processors. http://streetwizard.com/products/mobile_prods.htm

Is there an HPC 2000 MIPS version or is it just for StrongARM or xScale processors?
The reason I ask is that 790 runs on a MIPS processor! |

yes. and now look: the MIPS aygshells are better than the ARM ones. (ok limited testing so far but... ) the dummy dlls were created MIPS only first. for the casio BE300. Edited by cmonex 2006-01-25 9:05 AM

| I currently am using PS 2005 on mt PPC. I can generate Hpc maps from STREETS AND TRIPS '02 onto the '05 version and it can use them, same file extension, .mps.
The old freebie maps (PS '01) don't have the same extension, .p something or other.
Hey! just had a thought. You can export MS EXPEDIA STREETS '98 MAPS to Hpc. So, if you have access to those you can do it.
Or give me your town and I will generate you some maps in the '98 format to try.
I can email them to you. They run from 300k to a meg each.
I have about 6 or 7 different older mapping progs, from a previous job, ( I had to route equipment for that company). |

| Thanks for the offer, stftclmshell.
Right now I have Pocket Streets 2001 for my handhelds. Will these '98 maps work with this version?
