I've noticed in other threads that it is possible to use many cell phones as modems for HPCs. How does one make such a connection? I use IR routinely to sync my mobilepro 790 to my laptop, using activesync (or more commonly PC link).

And once the IR connection is made to the cellphone, is it not extremely sensitive to the positions of the phone and the HPC? I find that when I'm syncing with my laptop, its easy to lose the connection if one of the computers is moved slightly. Wouldn't such sensitivity make the use of the cell phone as a modem difficult in many mobile situations (e.g., on a train, on one's lap, etc)?

Would it be possible to connect a Treo 600 to the mobilepro 790 using a cable?

as for the basics, please use the search function also check out support section

yeah it's not comfortable, that's why i left the epoc/psion world and went WinCE, CE enabled me to use bluetooth instead of infrared but that's only one advantage of the many that hpc's have

about your treo, can it be used as a modem? not all older pda phones can do that.

I want to make some sort of square pipe, with the inside one long, four-sided mirror. Then have some sort of locking system...oh yes..

Guys, wake up and remember the good old serial port RS232.

Get a serial sync cable for the Treo, then put it in "tether mode". See this thread:
http://discuss.treocentral.com/archive/index.php/t-58742.html
There should be a way to connect it to your MP790's serial port. Then it's basically the same idea as a PC. TBH I haven't played with this kind of setup, but I'm sure someone on this forum has the expertise.

I do not know for sure, but it shoulds straight forward and I can't see a reason why it wouldn't work.

For other phones, there was an online store specialized in supplying cellphone serial cables... I forgot the address tho

I have a serial cable for my phone, but not the right kind! It is for the external pda, not a direct connect like I need. And now that Sprint seems to not let my 5 year old phone connect to the internet anymore...

Come on, it's just a baby! 5 years old! (With a 7 year old chipset. )

Hey rod actually asked specifically if it was possible with a cable

I am not sure if Bluetooth is actually easier. I have heard enough horror stories about trying to get a connection between PDAs. Can the Treo even work as a Bluetooh modem? I don't know.

And besides, with Bluetooth you need another slot. So you might need to swap out your WiFi card or something from your HPC. Unless you get an RS232 BT adapter...

BTW, I am not familiar with anything NEC. Does it have a standard serial port or does it have a special serial cable? If it's the special cable then you might need an adapter to connect two males together... <- OK SORRY ABOUT HOW THAT SOUNDED
