I had some service work done on my J728, and now I can't connect to my host laptop.

I downloaded and installed the new ActiveSync 4.1, that didn't help.
I deleted the partnership, and tried to reconnect, that didn't work
I'm using IR (has always worked before)
Both the Jornada and laptop have IR as connection source
I can't connect using either ActiveSync or PC Connection on the J28
I suspended the Norton stuff on the laptop, that didn't help
Error Code 678 (Remote Networking could not start due to critical error)

did you try ActiveSync 3.8?
consult http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0093.asp for info as to uninstalling 4.1 and reverting back to 3.8..

I think that's what I was using prior to the repair. I'll follow the link and report back. Thanks.

After deleting 4.1, there was no RAPI.dll file on my laptop. Downloaded and installed 3.8 successfully. Still can't connect.,

rapi.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32 (this is part of 3.8 I deleted it after installing 3.8, and A/S would not run w/o it

Microsoft must have fixed the installer logic then, you are the first case I know of where 4.1's uninstall removed RAPI.

Is it possible that while it was being services (I'm implying pulled apart) they damaed the IR lamp?
Do you have the ability to try a different connection method?

Great minds think alike. I have a J680, and after retrieving from the "miscellaneous" drawer and charging it, it gives me a ding and activates the IR icon on the laptop when placed nearby.

I have a serial cable, but no serial port on the laptop.

I sent the J728 back to the repair shop (second rework; three roundtrips now altogether). No wonder UPS drives new trucks and I drive an old one.

They claim they'll reimburse me for the 2nd and 3rd UPS charges, so I'll take them at their word before publicly blasting them.

I really do need this thing; I can't bear to think of lugging the "three ring binder" AKA Toshiba Satellite around the US
