| Hello,
I am in the process of finding major upgrades for my lower end eMachines T-2895 ... I would like to upgrade the RAM to two 1 GB DDR sticks.. My question, will XP Home support this?
Thank You,
Joseph |

| Yes it will, up to 4Gig provided that your motherboard supports it. It could only support 3Gig, 2Gig, 1.5Gig. So do read the manual on that one. |

| speed isnt just the memory. As far as I know, only Battlefield2 uses 2gb.
However, tweaking your system, stopping unneeded services, eliminating startup programs, that will get you more speed.
As well as some other little things like hard-drive optimisation.
for the record, my Windows XP pro boots up into windows in about 80mb of memory in use
that is including AVG Virus scanner already running.
(which is all that is running)
for games, you might even go as far as disabling the virus scanner before you start playing.
Adjusting the color-depth of your display will also affect speed, as well as a wallpaper on your desktop etc etc

| Personally I find that 1GB is enough for me (pc3200, dual channel ). I use 3dsmax and am a heavy gamer. I would say that for gaming purposes you're going to want to focus on your video card rather than your PC memory, especially since you already have 1GB. I personally have a 6800GT, which is a really good card for gaming |

| it also depends on the games themselves.
I run here with only 512mb, and for what I do, it's enough.
If the games you enjoy to play are the older ones, or the less graphically intensive ones (Command & Conquer, Civ3 etc) memory isnt a really big thing. You can also turn off some of the eye-candy of a game, or use a lower resolution to keep it playable.

mscdex,
I only have 512 MB right now..
Oops sorry, I misread
But just to give you an idea: a couple years ago I remember running only 256mb PC2100 (I believe ), 3ghz northwood, and a fx5900 video card and being able to run UT2004, Joint Operations, and a number of other games with no problems. Edited by mscdex 2006-03-12 5:18 PM
