Can anyone give me a tip on how to get started at linking my laptop (Win XP Home) with my WiBook? I have the ethernet cable but very little experience in setting up networks. I want to be able to use ActiveSync to load software onto the WiBook and it would be nice to use the laptop as a backup for WiBook files.

bthomson,

In order to ActiveSync, first you have to setup a partnership with it. This cannot be achieved over Ethernet.
There are a number of guides and articles in the support section covering Windows CE and LAN access. The most prevalent one is going to be:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0012.asp which is LAN sync.

Howeer before you do that you need to perform a Personal Area sync. This article will give you some ideas over what you need to do that:

My version of ActiveSync (4.1) doesn't show a LAN connection as an option in Connection Settings. Perhaps I should go back to 3.8.

I got a register editor and followed the instructions at http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0027.asp. from the above link. However, there is no existing Partnership at the Windows CE Services so I'm stuck, not knowing enough to even think about creating one, an option that isn't explained at these pages.

Another question. Is there anywhere to find out where INBOX and IESAMPLE store mail, addresses and bookmarks? I'm sure they're in the flash ROM or some such place and not visible (at least as far as I can tell) so they could be copied to a CF card for safety in the event of a hard reset. I've tried using nPop as a mailer but it regularly freezes during downloads of email and so isn't reliable. I have Qmail as well, but I can't find any non-PhD instructions for configuring it.

Microsoft removed LAN connectivity in 4.1 (unless you have an exchange server handy). You will need to return to 3.8, however until you have that partnership, you cannot LAN sync.

I guess I've become more Win CE literate. I went back to Qmail after last looking at it a couple of weeks ago and figured out how to configure it and it's working fine. Much better than InBox, since I can save my mail, address book, etc. Now all I have to do is find an alternative to ieExplorer so I can save my bookmarks instead of having Bill Gates eat them each time I have to do a hard reset! :-)
