| Hi guys, our team need to develop an OS image for a project. The problem we're having is we're not able to choose the OS version, partly because of the download errors. We decided to work on version 4.0 until further notice. Now, is there much of a difference between these two versions? Will development methods and toos work for both of them? | |

| When you say download errors, what do you mean? Download from Microsoft or download into the ROM image?
Between 4.0 and 5.0 there are HUGE differences. It is more subtle between 4.2 and 5.0. Using CE5 should be encouraged here as you can build prototype devices without the licensing expense (over and above platform builder). Additionally, being the latest and greatest shoudl be regarded as the "future" where as 4.2 is going to fade into the history books.
The methodology between using PB to create an image is very similar though, what you learn from one will be almost univerally applicable to the other. When it comes to 5.0 over 4.0 (but not 4.2) there is also the customer benefit of having a standard SDK available so that people can write software for your device without needing a specific SDK and it becoming your cost burden. | |
