If you connect the device to the Host over the LAN and then in ActiveSync perform a full backup, you wont have to remember in the future

Once again, I say this so often. Look in support.

OK. What we're looking at I think are several problems rearing their head. If you are having problems with the file list on Local sync and LAN, then please lets concentrate on one and not both.

In order for an ActiveSync connection to be sucessful it needs to have access to different sets of things

On the host:
It needs read / write permission access to its HKCU and HKLM hives in the Windows registry
Read / Write access to the program install directory %SYSTEMDRIVE%\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\
Read / Write access to the system global temp folder %SYSTEMROOT%\Temp\
Exclusive access to the Windows TCP/IP stack
Access to WinSock 2 for all connection types and then to SerialCOMM for IR/ USB / Serial
The ability to grab its own IP range (192.168.55.10x) and subnet (255.255.255.0) for local sync

Access to ports
TCP 990 (Services Manager)
TCP 999 (Services Manager)
TCP 5678 (Services Manager)
TCP 5679 (Communications Manager)

For LAN sync it also needs a slab of TCP ports in the 4600 range

The host either has to have (LAN Sync only):
NetBIOS resoloution (TCP 135 through 137)
A Fully registered FQDN A-Name entry on the Primary DNS server for the sync
A Fully registered WINS Name entry

You also need to be sure you undertand this:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0012.asp

The Host cannot have port blocking, the host cannot have packet filtering enabled through any firewall. Kill any firewalls services including the Windows firewall (Be sure you're not directly connected to the net now...), close down any packet monitoring and virus scanners (If you have anything 'Norton' branded running kill it irrispective *shudders*.
AdAware scan your system to make sure there isn't anything floating around keeping the ports open - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

For the H/PC:

You need to have a unique system name:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0009.asp

You need a FQDN, NetBIOS over TCP/IP LMHosts lookup or the IP Spoofed in the WINS lookup:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0014.asp

Regsitry access to HKLM and HKCU
AS Partnership

Ports:
TCP 1049
TCP 909
TCP 1050
TCP 1051
TCP 1048

C:Amie, I did a hard reset and reinstalled the ActiveSync and the card driver; that solve the problem. After reading your detailed post -- which was too challenging for a tech buddy of mine to follow -- I thought that I would never get it to workly properly.

Anyway, a careful re-reading of the manual suggested a hard reset. It also said I need to use WEP key #1 because I was not using one of the cards for which the unit has a built-in driver.

Again thanks for your help. I do appologize for posting everywhere. I've learned.

C:Amie, the device is still working well.

After some additional reflection, I've decided that I would be interested in your solution. However, it would require you to give me step-by-step instructions. For unfortunately, I am self educated with computers; a lot of the language I do not understand; this is my first foray into HPC.

Are you willing to guide me through your solution or do you think the challenge might be to daunting? If you accept the challenge, we could start a new thread which would give others the opportunity to learn. I refuse to believe that I am the only one without this knowledge. <grin>.

I understand http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0012.asp and http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0009.asp. The registry editing task (http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/c/0014.asp), while I feel I can do it readily(with your detailed instructions), it does cause me slight trepidation because I've read, “stay away from the registry.”

One reason I did not initially follow your suggestion is because I was anxious to get the device working. Since I had just bought it, it was more important for me to know that it would work. Now I want to learn more.

Thanks.

yes, i agree with J0HN, i'm no technical expert myself, tried the above (want LAN sync - plain ethernet, not wifi), but i'm sure i didn't understand everything..
