The time mine will work for varies, some times it's seconds, some times it enough to get a web page up, othertimes I've had it going for 10-15 even 20 minutes and then it'll suddenly stop.

You have tried the actual drivers from Socket's site, right? Don't just rely upon the Novell Ethernet driver alone.

Are you sure that it doesn't drop out on you on the Palm?

Hi, Jodi,

Which manufacturer made your soon-to-come Orinoco Gold Classic card?

If it's the Classic, it should be Agere.

Hi,

I haven't ordered one yet. On Ebay some of them say Proxim and some of them say Lucent. I haven't seen Agere - is that essential?

Thanks,
jodi

Too many chipset owners. These three companies have owned the chipset rights over time.
Proxim are the current owner, I'd avoid them if possible because of a few reports. Just be sure it's 16-bit

Odd on the Palm situation. I have never tried mine of a Palm device. I should try it on Win32 really.

I strongly recommend the ones made by either Agere or Lucent. The Proxim (or Avaya) ones are not as good, and some prople here have had some problems getting the Proxim ones to work in their H/PCs (though most of the problems appear to be with CE 2.0). Visual description of each manufacturer's version of the ORiNOCO Gold:

Lucent: blue label on inserted part of card, says "Lucent Technologies" on black receiver casing on end (good card)
Agere: purple label on inserted part of card, says "ORiNOCO" on black receiver casing on end, says "Agere Systems" among information on underside of card (I have this one, and it's a gem)
Proxim: has picture of man thrusting fist in air and attache case forward, says "Proxim" on black receiver casing on end (works great for some, not at all for others)

Thanks. I'll hold out for a Lucent.

My Socket LP works in a Handera 330.

CE Geek,

MANY thanks for such an informed list of the differences in the Orinoco cards. That post should be in the Factor Hall of Fame, as a multitude on this forum have agonized over, and often bought, the wrong Orinoco.

I salute you with all my awe ,
Jake

Do the Agere Orinoco cards also have one of those antenna ports? All the Orinoco cards I've found on ebay are lucent ones and some in seemingly less than legal sets.

Yes, the Agere card has an antenna port. The booster antenna that fits there is hard to find, though.

That's good then. I was trying to check the availablity of the Agere ones and if the antenna port doesn't fit the popular antennas then there might be more of them around.
