| Can I use ce.net based thin client as simple web surfing machines?
I am not demanding much. I want to do the following things with ce.net thin clients, possible?
scenario: no spearate servers for these clients. just as a PDA supporting bigger screen.
1. Surfing the net.
2. writing articles and saving to u pen drives. Does ce.net thin clients have already implement usb mass storage drivers in general? If not, can I install usb drivers on these clients? Do thin clients (in general) allow the user to run local programs on usb storage?
I learn from some articles that these clients no longer support (or ripped off) on machine cab installer. The user have to deploy special add-ons to these machines using special methods. i am interested in Wyse 3125se. the usb support has to be installed manually.
3. Playing music files. Some models have preinstalled wmp while others not. Not big problem. How about playing video files? I believe TCPMP doesn not have an X86 version and the current w32 version is not compatible with the x86 version on PDAs. Correct? Some thin clients have ATI video card. But i believe that few software (if any) would get the most out of these seemingly powerful video cards? |

| You can access the net via ethernet in some models... Also, you will need a monitor, and PS/2 keyboard/mouse.. There is some x86 software, someone a while ago compiled a list.. I do not know about USB ports, though... Also, I believe CE .net comes with either IE5.5 or IE6... There is no Pocket Office, only wordpad, I think..

| You can do all that from a thin-client, x86 or otherwise. There were some batches of Think-clients running CE4.2 going today on eBay UK for a very good price. |

| about tcpmp: you could ask Picard or another developer if they have an x86 CE version somewhere...
tcpmp supports the ATI chip.
my recommendation: buy one with 128 mb ram. |

| tenjeangosi, thank for ur info. I know of this list. but x86 hpc is my very very last choice coz its software is too limited.
but the issue is that how to install softwares on these clients. I doubt that for stablity and security, cab installation is not allowed. it may require special deployment or professinonal RDP thingy.

maybe import wceload.exe from PB?
or install the app on another hpc and copy it to the thin client
or analyze the cab and do everything manually.
anyway some of these do allow for cab installing, don't worry. |

The thin clients will maintain an installer sub-system. What you may find depending on the sophistication of the device (read hp vs generic) is that there is a middle-ware management system to add security. Thin clients generally speaking (again depending upon sophistication) are designed to work with server management solutions which add the scripting layer and directory interoperability. |

| Hi all, I'm so glad to see this thread as it is just the question I want to ask. I haver a Neoware EON3000i thin client (16meg Flash) running CE 4.1 and it is a good little machine with SB16, ISA/PCI expansion, HDD CD and SD ram support, blah, blah...
I want to use it for my kids and flatmates to surf the Internet too. It was designed as a dumb terminal so installed software is very limited. I want to install the Flash player and Japanese fonts so my kids can have fun and Japanese flatmates can view their web pages and if possible type Japanese txt too (IME). Naturally the device doesn't come with that ability. Neoware doesn't have the required snap ins.
I can't seem to install anything on it as it doesn't even come with a file explorer for me to install dll's etc or even have a look around. I'm real stuck.
I have tried some of the CE software listed above but I can't get anything to install and I can't seem to even find, to download (and try), wceload, even from the MS site.
I have a version of a remote manager from Neoware but that only allows me to install their updates (noting available for this device).
Do I have to give up or is there some way to hack this device?
I'm very interested in a responce, thanks |

Can you get to Run on the start menu? If so try:
explorer.exe
Otherwise try and get total commander onto it: http://www.hpcfactor.com/qlink/?linkID=129
Have you tried connecting it up to a PC via ActiveSync? That will get you into the file browser if it has the modules.]
Edit: Looking at the OEM's site, it looks like if you have the 6.0.3 rom on your device it might be possible to pay to upgrade to CE 4.2. |

| hm, if you don't even have a file explorer.. 
wceload is not publicly available (and a few other stuff would be needed too ), but before solving that you need to get a file explorer somehow. what programs are on it currently? do you have at least cmd?
totalcommander: C:Amie how can he get it onto the device if there's no file manager at all? anyway its a cab but i can send the installed files that just need to be copied without installing.
the only one thing i can think of now: if he has some sort of installing proprietary stuff onto the device, we can get a filemanager on it too (just like with the mio 268/269. there they renamed gsexplorer.exe to contacts.exe LOL )
in any case there's surely some sort of desktop. if you can get anything new onto that you won the battle  |

| cmd isn't a file manager, it's a shell but I understood what you meant.
You don't need windows explorer to be present to initialise activesync, MSIE can probably be used to a similar end (file browser or pull the file from FTP and tell it to 'RUN'.
