Hi,

I have a 820 with a broken hinge, otherwise works well. Does anybody know how this comes apart? or is there a manual available anywhere that shows to dis-mantle the unit etc?

Any information on the 820 would be most useful

Cheers

hp never issued public service manuals, you have to get them from them directly.
With most hp devices though you need a set of Torx screw drivers, to find the pressure points on the clip and just push.
Usually though part of the casing surrounding the hinges are load bearing and very difficult to get off.

I cannot be much more help than that.

If it is the right hinge looking at the screen, it may just be loose. Mine came loose and all I needed to do was put a torx wrench to the screw and tighten it. I don't remember how I got the cover off enough to get to the screw however. Think it just popped off when a little pressure was applied in right direction.

If hte hince bracket is the same as the 700 series then you need a T7 if I recall to do it.
The case front screws are beneath the small stickers in eack corner of the screen and the case front detaches from the back by way of clips - with the front plate moving away from the back plate.

Tightening The HP Jornada 820 Screen Hinge

Tools & Materials

Torx (6 pointed star) Screw Driver size T6
Utility knife or Pen knife
Contact Cement or most any glue for that matter
***That's It!***

Procedure

1) Place the J820 in front of you the way you normally would. Open the
screen. If you're reading this it should flop all the way back.

2) Find the four (4) screws that hold the screen together. The top two (2)
are under the rubber feet of the screen. The bottom ones are hidden under
small round stickers that are made to look like the screen's plastic.

3) Remove the 4 abovementioned scew covers by prying off with a knife. Be
careful not to scratch the plastic.

4) Remove screws using Torx screwdriver

5) Close the screen.

***HERE'S THE SEMI-TOUGH PART***

6) Notice how the screen cover is made of two (2) parts: Outer (light
grey) and Inner (dark grey). You have to remove the Outer (light grey)
cover by SLOWLY prying apart the two pieces. The pieces snap together with
tabs all around the screen. Start at one point and slowly start to pry the
two pieces apart. To ease the strain when prying at the tabs, the light
grey cover must be pulled outward and dark grey cover must be pushed inward.
I personally broke two tabs doing this but I wouldnt even notice it.

7) Once the cover is off the the J820 should look like the attached photo
when place in front of you the way you normally would. Refer to this pic
from now on.

8) Locate the plastic covers of the hinges. Notice how they are also
composed of two parts.

9) Just slide the top half of the hinge cover outward.

10) TIGHTEN THE HINGE SCREW with the same Torx screwdriver

11) Put everything back together again using the glue (just a tiny drop) to
attach the screw covers of Step 2. Two of mine didn't even need glue since
what was left was still pretty tacky.

12) Open your Jornada with pride once more!
