HP Jornada 680 cannot get out of calibration

I have a somewhat old Jornada where the screen is far out of allignement. When I start "screen calibration" or when I do a hard reset, I get in the calibration screen (with the moving cross). Now I can point on these crosses as often as I want, the screen doesn't change from saying I need to point on the cross or ESCape to cancel. It never comes to saying to press ENTER to confirm. I have done this almost 40 times now and it remains stuck on that screen.

Can anyone help ?

I'm going to guess that the digitizer (touch screen) has failed. Not sure if a software problem could cause it. I have a spare if you need it, though it has a few scratches.
