[WTB] Intermec 6651 battery [nld]

sorry, i noticed only now that you ordered only one battery (cell?)... what hpc do you have?

When I replace the cells in the battery, must I do something with the brand new cells before I place the cells into the battery, for example first full charge the cells with a special charger? Or can I place the brand new cells into the battery, connect the battery onto the 6651 and charge it for a day?

As far as some earlier real world experience about the recelled higher capacity batteries not knowing how much juice they’ve got: It all depends on the regulator chip. But what I know of battery theory, the best thing to do is zero everything out first. For starters, the best way to store Li-Ion cells is at about a 60-80% charge. But if they come to you at that capacity, and you put them in a casing with a chip that thinks the batteries have zeroed, well, that little bit of silicon gets mighty confused. My suggestion, discharge your main battery till it can’t go any more. When you get your new cells, test them to see what kind of voltage they are throwing off. If it’s within about half a volt of the cells rated output, hook up a small light bulb like you’d find in a flashlight, and let it drain until the bulb is dim. This uses the power in the battery without short circuiting it. The smaller the bulb, the better. Use all proper precautions when working with electrical components.

The end result is that the amp hour chip thinks the cells are drained, and the cells actually are drained. So the chip’s logic is not compromised. NOTICE: this is mostly speculative on my part. I’ve spent the past eighteen months or so looking into batteries and their pitfalls in hopes of making my vehicle an EV. I plan on re-celling my Jornada battery by month’s end in the method I’ve described. At the very most, no harm will be done, but I can’t swear to it. Battery hack at your own risk.

Always give a brand new set of cells a full day’s charge once in the battery.

oflash, i've never done any of this discharging stuff before having my batts refurbished, and never a problem. also, you know, li-ion doesn't really like full deep discharges if you want it to be at around 0% capacity well it should go below 3.5V a cell but not below 3.0V. li-ion also doesn't really care about that first full long charge you mention.
all in all if you go refurb your jornada batteries you will not have to drain the cells
the intermec is different, it uses some extra circuitry or something .. but i dunno, just never heard of anyone who could refurb it without losing the capacity indicator.. also if you measure the voltage on the terminals you'll get very complex results, it's definitely not like the jornada batteries.

I am going to send my battery back to Intermec here in the USA . They have a repair center I am going to send it to and see what happens.
