That must have made C:Amie cringe...

oh yes ... cringe ... be afraid ... be very afraid ... mwaahahahahha ... I wish billg was cringing ... ... then maybe he will bring back the HPCs ...

hey, you know what? Come to think of it, what we should do to revive HPCs is not to buy Jornadas or MobilePros or any HPCs, but to buy the Sharp Zaurus SL C### series. This would encourage Sharp to bring them back officially in US and UK and in doing so, perhaps encourage them to lower their price point, leading to wide-spread adoption, leading to mass market, leading to everyone owning a Zaurus, leading to billg crapping his pants and begging HP and their bed-buddies to churn out HPCs with all the whistles and bells, and giving them free whenever anyone trades-in their "old" Zaurus they just got! ...

... no, that's not happening? oooh ... its just me and my daydreaming ....

That would be nice!!!
But to get back on the point, I was wondering how NetBSD for MIPS HPC was treating you now, after all this time?

well ... sadly, after my fiddling with dillo0.8.0, I shutdown NetBSD and relegate the 512MB CF to archive mode ... for now. While dillo is faster etc, it fails miserably as far as compatibility with web sites (as of build 0.8.0). I mean, it refused to accept cookies that are malformed without even giving users an option! enuff of this, you can see other threads on my rants about dillo!

In short, NetBSD is not running on my 790 for awhile, but I might try it out these few days with the bin for minimo. Will keep you folks posted.

Has anyone tried NETBSD SH on a Jornada 680/690?

Ok, I know most 680's are 16mb but mine is 32 and I
would like to know if anyone has got this working.

It would be great if people could make images
of their working NETBSD with X11 Install CF cards
as a ghost style image on the pc.

That was the less tecnically minded of us could
download the image to our pc, put the cf in the pc
card reader and write the image to the cf.

It would be cool if somone set up a site that
had NETBSD cf images for all the most popular
hpc / hpc 2000 machines.

There is a jlime thread for linux on J680/690 etc. www.jlime.org

I tried the bootloader ... works as described. The loading up is long though (20secs or more!) ... so dun freak out after running the shlo.exe (or something) and the system seem to freeze. Its just taking a longer time to load up.

There is another thread with someone describing the steps to setup a CF card and install jlime. Have fun.

I'm having mepis linux dual-booting on my m300 (Compaq notebook) with WindowsXP /SP2. The bootloader is so seamless now, its really nice.

Snappy!

Today I completed the installation and managed to do some browsing.
Some comments:

1. I followed the Summary and used the Binaries, as indicated before.
2. Installed with NetBSD 1.6.2 in an IBM 1GB Microdrive.
3. df : -4MB plus the 50MB swap.
4. It is slow due to the 131MHz chip, only 48MB memory and
the z50 screen. But the previous issue can have any influence? Could be
improved in a bigger Microdrive with a bigger swap? Virtual memory?
5. Have to build and install perl -5.8.3 because using the Package was not
recognised by glib2-2.4.0. Quite surprising.
6. Installed libjpeg, libpng, and libtiff.
7. When ./run-mozilla.sh ./TestGtkEmbed got the following:
Gtk WARNING: cannot open display.
Then I did startx and ./run-mozilla.sh ./TestGtkEmbed from there and
got the screen and able to connect with several websites. Later will try
hotmail.com.

Cheers!

oski

OK, I'm brand new to this board . . . and have never used Linux . . .

But I have an NEC Mobile 750C. It was given to me several years ago, then I couldn't get it to work after taking it apart once (long story : ). Anyway, the other day I pulled it out of the drawer where it's lay in pieces for probably 2.5 years, put it together - and it works perfectly!

Then today, and idea hit me - this thing has a PC Card slot, I wonder if I could get a wireless card and use it to surf at Panera??

I had come across the NetBSD/hpcmips site the other day, and figured it'd be best to use a Linux browser like Opera instead of the ancient IE on WinCE 2.x. So I started checking into using Linux . . . and found this thread.

Thing is, like I said, I'm a total Linux newbie. I do consider myself a techie - have done programming and web development for years, got my MSCE+I under NT4, etc. But I've mostly always used Wintel (though I did have OS/2 for a while, lol).

So . . . is there any way I can turn my palmtop into a little browsing device? I could really use step-by-step instructions . . . I've read through this thread, but I'm still not entirely sure if I know how to go about this.

I also noticed that the compatability chart for NetBSD/hpcmips did not have a "Y" under "XServer" for the 750C . . . does that mean I'm limited to Lynx, or is there still hope of using a decent graphical browser?

ANY help is greatly appreciated. I'm glad I found this site!!
