I have two 720s and an 820. Does anyone know if there is a version of Microsoft Reader which will work on my machines. sorry if this is a simple question, but I'm an "oldie " of 57 and female to boot. I've visited the MS Reader site but can't find a version. Surely MS haven't stopped supporting a system that is only 4 years old?

Alas the answer is, yes they have.
However, Siemens paid them to port accross Reader to the SL4. So there is a HPC2000 build of it floating about.

Compiled here by Henri from j7xx Handheld Attitude:
http://www.yetanotherhomepage.com/j7xx/msr/msr.html

Alas it is a little complicated if you're not an experienced user. You will need MS Reader installed on your Host PC as well.

There is only the installer for Arm processors on that site.
This won't work on my MP790 - I went through the whole process of activating my desktop version and manipulating those files only to realize that I had downloaded an Arm cab file. There is no Mips download on that site.
Does anyone know where to get a Mips installer (HPC 2000) for Microsoft Reader?

Nothin' for ya, my friend

What I've been doing is converting the lit files into html with this bad boy here and reading them in uBook. Works really well, actually!

I believe this is true, only if you want to purchase ebooks in the .lit format.

If you are simply interested in reading one of the many free ebooks (in .lit format) available from on-line sources, then you don't require going through the whole registration/activation process. Nor do you need to have Reader installed on your Host PC.

Hi,
Is there a free ebook reader just to read docs , txts and html for the simpad sl4?

I'm used to my Zaurus linux platform where everything is free and works pretty well. Guess I'm spoiled. Love to read ebooks on my Z with JustReader.

I'm not talking about proprietary forms like lit or anything just ordinary docs, txts and html.

(Waiting for my Simpad from Ebay.)

Hey, I'm female and 63! Old lady geeks are everywhere.

Thanks in advance.

hi there! welcome to the club! ... I also got the SL4. Received it in 2~3days! ok, answers:

1. docs - if you are referring to word docs, you can read them with PocketWord in HPC2k or CE.NET4.1 (you will have to flash the ROM to 4.1)
if you are referring to Palm pdb docs file, there is iSilo etc. If not, you may wanna let us know the doc format you are trying to read so that we can help.
2. txt file can be easily opened with PocketWord.
3. HTML file by PIE in the default HPC2k ROM, and by IE5.5 in CE.NET4.1

Also, you can try uBook (gowerpoint.com). Its a multi-format reader that reads unencrypted pdb files, rtf, txt, html etc. The free version will display a nag page once every few pages. Go to the site for registration details. Good thing about it is that, once license gives you a license file and you can use it on any of the platform that is supported.

After using it for awhile, I actually unconsciously filter out the nag screen by myself! ... but someone got me the license ultimately, so no more nag screen.

NOTE:
if you are already used to Zaurus, you can also flash the ROM to OpenSimPad/Opie and you will have a familar (or same) interface, depending on which model of Zaurus you own. I just tried it yesterday, and its pretty good! www.opensimpad.org

If you need help with the flashing, start another thread under Off-Topic and I'll post the steps to flash to OpenSimPad/Opie.

1. what's the problem with hpc2000 pocketword?

3. it is IE 4 in hpc2000 not PIE!

Well, I know about ubook from this thread but it's not free, and I want to read ebooks in doc or txt form which I download using IRC from #bookz....even got the 2 Clinton's lastest books there and all the latest Robin Cook, Steven King, whatever you want and they're free. They are usually in doc or txt format.

I TOLD you I'm spoiled and try NEVER to pay for anything...although I donate hefty bucks via PayPal to people who develop software I use and have PayPal "donate" buttons on their web sites.

So I guess there's nothing out there for Windows CE in the way of a FREE ebook reader?

I hate to flash to any Opie ROM on the SimPad because I have 2 zauri and one has the latest 3.53 Opie on it and it is so flakey and generally BAD that it is almost unusable compared to my Zaurus which has the latest Sharp ROM installed on it. I just don't want a bunch of headaches with the software like you get with Opie.
